When Joseph returned from the Phillipines War he was a locomtive fireman with the Railroad. He was living on 4th West Street, according to the l900 U.S. Census. He was a boarder in the Harry B. Rugg family home. Mr. Rugg was a forman at the railroad shop, so they had railroading in common.
It would appear from the Census record that he was living next door to the Henry E. Giles family. He married the daughter of Henry E. Giles. Joseph's sister, Eliza Engberg, married a Henry Beaumont Rugg, but it is not known if Henry was related to the Harry Rugg family.

In April, 1902, Joseph married Catherine Ann Giles. They had three children. At some point in time Joseph had contracted Tuberculosis. His conditioned worsened and they moved to Arizona for his health. Catherine came home for birth of their third child, Catherine, in 1909. Since the baby, Catherine, was only two and one-half pounds and required care Catherine Ann stayed at home in Salt Lake with her family until the baby Catherine was out of danger. Then they went back to Winslow, Arizona to join Joseph.

On the 1910 U.S. Census, taken 29th May, Arizona, Jo is listed as a Locomotive Engineer. Verna was 7, Clifford was 5 and Catherine was 1. But Joseph was not getting better. At sometime later that year the family returned home to Salt Lake. Joseph died from the Tuberculosis in December that year in Salt Lake City.

A short history of Joseph James Engberg by Jenalyn Giles Cline.
"Joseph James Engberg, `Joe' to us who knew and loved him, was fair- complexioned, blue eyes, light brown hair, five foot eleven and one-half inches tall, and not a very heavy man for his height.

Joe enlisted as a private of Battery H of the Third Regiment of Artillery on the first day of June, 1898, to serve three years. His military record states that he was in the campaign against Spain in the Philippine Islands Expedition in 1898. He was in action before Manila, July 31 and August 1,2,3,4, 1898; Campaign against Philippine insurgents in 1899, and in action Tonda 4 February, La Soma 5 February, Capture of Culoean the 10th of February. He was 22 years and 9 months old at this time.

The wound he received in action was a gunshot wound in the leg. His physical condition, when discharged on 14 August 1899, was good.

Remarks on his service record were honest and faithful and very good. His occupation was a fireman on the railroad after his return from military service.

He was married to Catherine Ann Giles 16 April, 1902 by Bishop Orson F. Whitney, of the Eighteenth Ward, Salt Lake City. Joe's father, Elof N. Engberg, lived with Joe's half sisters and brother, Dell, Ida, Lillian, Vera and William in the Ensign Ward on 9th Avenue, but at the time they were married it was all one ward, the 18th Ward.

Joe later contracted a serious lung disease which impaired his health and Joe and Kate moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in hopes of improving Joe's health, but they came home again and the babies wer coming now. They had three while they were trying to get Joe's health better. They made another move to Winslow, Arizona, a railroad town, and they made many friends ther and could have been veryhappy, but there didn't seem to be anything the dfoctors could do for Joe. Kate camehome to our hous [141 3rd Avenue, SLC] to have her baby daughter, Cathering, who just weighed two and one-half pounds when born. My mother, Catherine Evans Giles, nursed her and watched over and kept her alive and she grew to be a wife and mother herself, but we lost her at too early an age of a weak and broken heart after the untimely death of her only young son, her only child, Paul, who was in the militaryservice and was in an accident and killed in Paris, France at 18 years of age. Paul Engberg Williams.

When Joe and Kate were sealed in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple 20 September, 1950, June B. Sharp stood as proxy.

Catherine Ann Giles was born 12 Dec 1884, on Saturday morning at 2:45 a.m. in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the fourth child and first daughter of the Giles', Catherine Hughes Evans Giles and Henry Evans Giles. She was named Catherine after her mother and Ann for her mother's mother."

A Sister to Catherine Anne Giles Engberg

Aunt Kate worked at Z.C.M.I. and was the buyer for Women's Fine Longerie until she retired. She bought the home on 141 3rd Avenue. Her parents lived there until their deaths. Aunt Jennie and Jenalyn also lived there until Jenalyn married and Aunt Kate moved to San Francisco. But Aunt Kate riased and supported her family, as did Aunt Jennie. It could not have been an easy life for the two sisters but they did it cheerfully, both of the sisters being successful in their work at Z.C.M.I.
