EXPLANATORY STATEMENT BY HOWARD SHARP BENNION:

The Will of Hugh Kenrick of Kilken or Cilcain, drawn 15 Jan. 1704/05 and probated 7 Feb. 1704\05 names the following children:
Sons: Kenrick Hughes, Robert Hughes and Edward Hughes
Daughter: Luce, wife of John Roberts of Nannerch
       Son: Griffith
Grandson; Robert, son of my son Edward
Grandchild ?????, son of my daughter Lucy (Couldn't read name)
Son: John Hughes to be executor of will.

The testator's wife was not named, signifying she had died previously.
The will names three of the children of Hugh Kenrick and Jame verch Thomas listed in Cilcain parish register. I did not find the names of three children listed in the will, namely Robert, John and Kenrick in Cilcain or other parish registers or transcripts.

Four of the seven children listed in the will were shown with the surname of Hughes.

The will of Robert Kenrick of Kilken, drawn 4 Mar 1709/10 and probated 13 Mar 1709/10, names the following relatives:
       Wife: Margaret verch Thomas
Nephew: John Hughes, to be overseer; Nephew Griffith Hughes.
Grandnephew: Robert, son of Kenrick Hughes, a bequest when 21 years old.
Nephew: Edward Hughes and his son, Robert.
Nieces: Luce and Sarah Hughes; the three children of nephew Robert Hughes.
Nephew: Robert Thomas and his family.
Nephew: Robert Williams and his daughter.

He names no children of his own, but he names seven nephews and nieces who are stated to have the surname Hughes and are listed among the ten children of Hugh Kenrick and Jane verch Thomas as shown on the attached family group sheet.

The foregoing data is proof that Hugh and Robert Kenrick are brothers; that the children of Hugh Kenrick used the surname of Hughes; that Lucy Hughes is the daughter of Hugh Kenrick and that she married John Roberts.

I found only one marriage of a John Roberts and Lucy Hughes, that in the register of Cilcain and that was 25 Aug. 1696 in Cilcain. I found no such marriage in the transripts of surrounding parishes. I found no christening of a child named Lucy in several decades before 1696 except the one born to Hugh before 1696 except the one born to Hugh and Jane Kenrick and christened in 1677.

John Roberts and Lucy Hughes had two children christened in Cilcain. Then there is a gap of eight years and then the Nannerch transcript shows the christening of three more children of this couple. I went to Nannerch in 1961 and could not see the register because the minister was away, but I arranged to have him make a search for members of this and other Roberts families. His search reported to me by letter added nothing to what I already had.

I made careful searches of wills and probate records for the parishes of Cilcain, Hope, Mold, Northop and also Hawarden a few years ago (I have over 300 pages of such notes.) I have reviewed these notes for wills or probate orders of parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts who might have made bequests to Hugh or Robert Kenrick. I did not recognize any such record which would prove relationship. I carefully searched the Cilcain register and the transcripts of neighboring parishes for Kenrick families. Undoubtedly, several of these Kenrick families are closely related to the two brothers Hugh and Robert Kenrick, but the early registsers and transcripts are so stripped of descriptive information and there are so many omissions and gaps that I am not able to establish additional definite relationship ties.

"The Kendrick or Kenericke or Kenric name as a surname, like the Lloyd surname, persisted from generation to generatioin in early North Wales records.
"The marriage record is obtained from the will of Robert Kenrick. I was unable to find a marriage record. The parish registers and transcripts are far from complete.

Upon further review of the wills it appears that Robert Kenrick's wife, Margaret verch Thomas ap John Griffiths, was the older sister of Hugh Kenrick's wife, Jane verch Thomas ap John Griffiths. HSM

"The will of Robert Kenrick of Kilken, drawn 4 March 1709/1710 and probated 13 Mar 1709/1710, names the following relatives:
