Gerald was a constable of Pembroke in Wales. He helped Strongbow secure dublin for the English 1172. He recieved from Henry II Warden of the city under Hugh De Lacy. 1176 he recieved a grant and made baron of Offaly, which today are the towns of Maynooth and Naas. he was a modest man a sunburnt face , and good-looking. Medium height but a man of few words. He did not look for attention, he had faults but not great crimes. Modest, chaste, sober, trusty, full weight.

They had no trouble being skilled fighters in taking over Ireland, boasting he could have taken the whole of Ireland and made it Norman ruled. They were allowed to have holding in Leinster and Munster.
