HISTORY: Pomfret, Vermont, The Pioneer Settlers "The Colony of New York made an attempt to enlist men from the New Hampshire Grants in the service of the colony, and some Pomfret men were so eager to take part in the contest that they enlisted under New York officers. Asa kChedel, Jr., enlisted September 11th, 1776 in Captain John Wait's company. These men were all living in Pomfret at that time. But this battalion was not permitted to serve because of the widening breach between the authorities of New York and the conventions of the Green Mountain Boys. Appeal was often made to Congress for recognition of the New Hampshire Grants as a distinct colony, ubt this was invariably refused. Meanwhile the people on the New Hampshire Grants were intensely hostile to England, and their scattered homes lay between the forces of the British in Canada and the coilonies to the southward. They were on the frontier, open to attack and without allies. It became neccessary for them to prepare for war. To provide money for the purchase of arms and munitions, courts of confiscation were organized to seize upon the estates of Tory citizens and sell them. In the northern part of the present State of Vermont there were large areas of land that had not been granted or chartyered by any auithority. Charters for new towns were granted by the State of Vermont and the fees received from the grantees were expended for guns, powder and lead. The Green Mountain Boys were eager to enter the service of the colonies, and, as soon as hostilities opened, a convention of delegates from several towns near Bennington sent Ethan Allen and Seth Warner to PIhiladelphia to obtain from thje Continental Congress authority to raise a regiment of Green Mountain Boys."
