North Carolina became a state in 1789 Rutherford County was formed in 1779 from Tryon County. Tryon County was formed in 1768 from Mecklenburg County, VA. Mecklenburg was formed from Anson Co. in 1762. Anson was formed from Bladen Co. in 1749. Bladen Co.was formed from New Hanover Co. in 1734. New Hanover was formed from Craven Co. in 1729.
