Leonard EPLEY
BIRTH: 1800 Census of Adams County, Pennsylvania. DEATH-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-GRANDCHILDREN: Abstracts of "Adams County Pensylvania Wills 1800-1826" states: Leonard APLEY--of Tyrone Township, Adams County, PA.-- Children: John, Jacob, Henry, Michael, David, Catherine widow of William CLARK, Elizabeth wife of Silvans DAY, Sarah wife of Thomas GRIFFITH, Margaret wife of Jacob SAWVEL, Susanah. Grandchildren: Mary CLARK, John, Jacob, George and Moses WOOLF. Executors: John CLINE, Jacob SAWVEL. Witnesses: Henry SHRIVER and Nicholas GRIST. Written on the Mar. 9, 1819. Inventory of Leonard Apley's deceaced, estate was taken on Mar. 27, 1819. I Have copy of the original Will. The birth order of the children were determined by the order they were named in the will. LAND: I have a copy of a Gettysburg Newspaper called "Centinel" dated March 22, 1820 that states on the saturday of April 1st, there will be a public sale of a small Plantation containing about 40 acres situated in Tyrone township, Adams County, late property of Leonard Eppley, deceased. There are on the premises, a good log House and Barn, and a good Orchard. About 20 acres are cleared; the residue young thriving timber. The land is of as good quality as any in the settlement. Terms will be made known on the day of sale. John Kline & Jacob Sauble the executors. March 7, 1820 SPOUSE-CHILDREN: sources used were: LDS IGI Extaction of Church Records of Adam Co., PA. "Church Record of Adams Counties, PA" FHL film 0022176. TAX LISTS: I find Leonard in several of the Tax Lists of York County, PA. He is not listed in the 1771 Tax Lists, but in the 1779 Tax List is a Leonard Apple, but his township in York County is not named. Then in the 1780 Tax Lists a Lonhard Eppley is listed in a PD Twp. (which township is this?). In the 1789 and 1790 Tax Lists a Leonard Appley is listed in Tyrone Township of York County, (Adam County is later formed out of York County sometime after 1790 and before 1800). POSSIBLE RELATIVES: Matthias Epley (son of John & Rosina Epley) has a son, John Epley who serves in the Revolutionary War as a guard of a prisioners of war camp. In John's application for a war pension, it mentions that John served as a substitute for his father Matthias, and later his father brought a George Leonard who asked John to serve another 3 months as a substitute for him. I believe that Leonard's full name might be George Leonard Epley. On the internet I found where it talks about German naming patterns. It says German's were given a first, middle, and last name. The first name is usually after a saint, the second name is what they were called by, and then the last name. This is why I think that possibly on the pension record the scribe accidentally left of Leonard's last name, but that John Epley actually substitued for George Leonard (Epley) who was a relative of his. Of course, so far this is not PROVEN.
