HISTORICAL NOTES:
SOURCE: book "Pioneer Eppley of America" compiled by Gertrude Fryburg.
"John Epplee, born about 1720 or earlier. Where or who his parents were we do not know, nor the date of his arrival or on what ship or from whence. The first and earliest date that we have of him is a grant of 221 acres of land situated in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and surveyed June 16, 1767, by two Orders dated October 3rd, 1766 (#1408 and #1409) in which his name is written John Applee, and the tract of land, owing to its peculiar shape, was called "Many Corners". He signed his name by making his mark H E to several deeds. His wife was Rosina and she also signed by her mark. By a Deed datedNovember 5, 1783, John Epplee and wife Rosina convey to their son Hans Peter Epplee, eighty acres, a part of the above land and buildings. In this Deed, John Epplee is called a Book Binder.
His death occured about 1795. A deed was signed by he and his wife
Rosina April 29, 1790. His Will was signed August 31, 1789, and probated
November 30, 1795, in which he gives all to his wife Rosina, excepting to his
Eldest son Matthias Eply, five shillings and his youngest son Hans Petter Eply, five shillings. He also mentions his Plantation adjoining the lands of Samuel Wildisin, George Apel and others. John appoints Conrad Sherman and Francis Heim to be the executors of his last will and testament. The witnesses to this Will were George Aple, Samuel Wildisin, and Henry Danner. It is thought his brothers/sister or relatives to be Wendel Apfel and George Appel who are brothers, and their sister Margaret who marries Samuel Wildasin. His will is signed with an X for His mark, and is on file in York County, Pennsylvania.
Apparently the death of Rosina, his wife occured close to his own death, as we find Administration on Estate of Rosina Eppley was granted November 19, 1795 to Peter Epply, and the Will of John Eppley was probated November 30,1795"

NAME: John's last name is spelled the following on documents as Ebli, Ebele, Eble, Eppeli, Eppele, Epply, Epley, Eply, Apfel, Apley, Appel, Apple. John's name is entered also as "Johannes Eppeli" his wife Rosina, as witnesses to baptism of child Rosina, daughter of Susanne Eppeli. MARRIAGE DATE-PLACE:
York County, Pennsylvania; St. Matthews Luthern Church; FHL film #020499--Matthias'
marriage to Anna Maria Ritter. Marriage performed by Rev. C. F. Wildbahne.
CHILDREN:
Emmanual Reformed Church, Hanover, Pennsylvania. FHL film #20,499.
Matthias Eble and Christiana are listed as the parents of Maria Elizabeth Eble, born 19 Feb.
1771, baptized 21 April 1771. The witnesses are John Peter Ebele and Maria Elizabeth Kuntz.
In John Epley's (b. 1765) Revolutionary War Pension Record, FHL Film #970931 (Application
date 9 July 1834) he states that his father is Matthias Epley. The other children I have listed for
Matthias: Anna Margaretha, Jacob, Daniel, and Peter are NOT PROVEN. Much circumstantial
evidence points towards them being siblings of John, because they all migrate to N. Carolina
together as close neighbors and do several leagal transactions with each other.
PARENTS:
The will of John Epley, York County, Pennsylvania Wills, FHL #22133. States that his wife is
Rosina and their eldest son if Matthias and their youngest son is Hans Peter.
MILITARY SERVICE:
During the Revolutionary War private Matthias Epley (Epli) served several militia tours: Oct. 10,
1781-Dec. 10, 1781 in Captain Andrew Foreman's Co., guarding Convention prisoners at
Camp Security near Yor, and again Dec. 7, 1781-Feb. 7, 1782 in Captain John Wampler's Co.
These are probably the dates for John Epley's service as a substitute for his father Matthias.
Matthias Epley was drafted for the Revolutionary War but had his oldest son, John Epley serve
in his place. John was stationed three miles East of the town of York, PA. where he served his
fathers six month assignment, this was in the spring of 1782. At the end of this six month
period, Matthias Epley brought to the camp a George Leonard and persuaded his son, John
to serve three months in hi stead (I believe this George Leonard name is actually George
Leonard Epley, who appears to be related). John served a total of nine months of service as
            a guard during the Revolutionary War. Archives, Service 6, Vol. 2, pg. 643, 649, 746, 815.
TAX LISTS:
Matthias is listed on the Tax Lists of Manheim Township, York County, PA. in 1771, 1779, 1780,
and 1790. In the 1779 Tax List it shows Matthias as owning no land, negros, or horses, but he
did own two cattle and was taxed $10. He is living next to his father John who owned 100 acres
and 7 cattle. In 1780 Matthias is listed with two cattle. The 1788 Tax List of Manheim Twp.
shows Matthias as owning 112 acres of land, no horses, two cows, no negros or grist mills.
CENSUS:
1790 Census of York County, Pennsylvania, Matthias Apley was listed as a resident of Manheim
Township. His house hold had two males over the age of 16 which included the head of the
family, two younger males under the age of 16, and two females including the head of the family.
In 1795 Matthias is listed as a resident in Paradise Township, York County, PA. but he does not
appear in the county in later census records.
LAND:
On feb. 2, 1788 there was a Sheriff's Sale of Matthias Apple's estate. Matthias apparently owed
Michael Zimmer a debt of 186 pounds and 19 shillings. In the document it states that sheriff
John Edie did "seize the estate of Matthias Apple and improvement and Tract of Land situated
in Manheim Township (York Co., PA) containing one hundred and thirty acres more or less
adjoining lands of George Apple, Samuel Wiltison and others." Source: FHL film 022106
            book 2E, pg. 423.
OCCUPATION:
Matthias was a Yeoman as stated in the document of the Sheriff's Sale of estate for Matthias
            Apple.

PARENTS: Will of John Epley's; York County, Pennsylvania Wills, FHL film
#22133. In John's will, Peter is listed as "my youngest son
Hans Peter". The name "Hans" is a nickname for "John" in the
             German language.
BIRTH DATE-PLACE:  St. Matthew's Luthern Church, Hanover, York County, Pa.;
FHL film #20499. The entry shows John Ebli is listed as having a
son John Peter Ebli. The witnesses are John Henry Ginne and Peter
             Eerl and wife.
CHILDREN: Emmanual Reformed Church records, Hanover, Pa.; FHL film #20499.

3 Jan. 1778, baptized 11 Jan, 1778. The witnesses are Matthew
Eble and wife Christine. This record is also entered in the IGI
In the 1790 Census of Manheim Twp., York County, Pennsylvania it
shows Peter Apley living next to Matthias Apley and John Apley
(I believe this John is the son of Matthias). In this Census of
1790, Peter has 3 sons under the age of 16, and 4 females (one is
probably Peter's wife, and the other 3 his daughters). In the
1800 Census of York Co., Pa. in Manheim Twp., Peter Epley and his
wife were listed as 26-45, with four teenage children, a boy
and three girls ages 10-16 years. (I found the above documents of
information during my research, then it was reconfirmed through
the "Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine" fall
1978 edition page 101, compiled by Frances Davis McTeer.")
TAX LISTS: Peter is not on the 1771 Tax Lists in York County, Pennsylvania,
the only ones listed in Manheim Twp were his father John Epley,
brother Matthias Epley, and relative George Apfel. Peter is

Manheim Twp., York County, PA., In the 1798 Federal Direct Tax for
Manheim (list 2) shows Peter Epley as owner and occupant of a house
valued at $60 and a 30 by 20 foot barn valued at $83 (no glass
windows indicated for either structure), this property is
adjoining Michael Newman and Thomas Kelly, he had a total
            valuation of $290.
MILITARY: During the Revolutionary War Peter Eaplie was listed with his
brother Matthew in the 7th Class in Capt. John Wampler's Co.,
