He is commonly reputed to have been the natural son of Duke of William of Normandy, by a daughter of Ingelric, an Anglo-Saxon.... The lady's name is doubtful; by Morant she is called Maud, while Leland calls her Ingelrica. It is further stated that Ingelric's daughter, the mistress of the Conqueror, was given in marriage by Duke William to Ranulph Peverel, a Norman knight, and that her husband consented that her bastard son should bear the name of Peverel. The more general account, however, is that the wife of Ranulph Peverel became the mistress of the Conqueror, whose issue by her took the name of her husband's family"
