Parents (no known first name) of Samuel Hunter left Ireland in the summerof 1792 because of
religious persecution. They were compelled to leave all their possessions
behind as they boarded a ship for refuge in the United States. The ship became
lost in a severe storm and was much longer in reaching this country than
expected. Samuel was born during the time they were at sea. There was no
clothing for him as they expected to be here before the time of his birth.
Kind sailors gave some of their old underwear to be used for the baby. It is
not known what port they came to but they settled in northern Pennsylvania.
There were other Hunters there who had come from Ireland earlier, they could
have been relatives.

Samuel served in the war of 1812, his record states he was drafted fromButler
Co., PA. His discharge papers were left with his mother in Butler County. Therefore it is thought that
his father had died before that time. The next we know of Samuel waswhen he maried Agnes Blair 25 May 1820. The Blairs were also from Ireland. To this union, four children were born; John, William, Eloise and Margaret. Agnes Blair Hunter died 31 Mar 1846. On 16 May 1848,Samuel married Abbey Ellen Hastings in the Township of Woodcock inCrawford Co. Penn. This was Abbey's second marriage also. Samule and Abbey Ellen lived in Meadowville, Penn and while there James and Charleswere born. In 1853 they came to Diamond Bluff, Wis. They arrived inlate fall and had to hurry in building a log cabin before winter set in.James told how little furniture, and that they used pieces of large logscut off for chairs. He also told of seeing an Indian with his facepressed aginst the window glass looking in. John Hunter (Grandfather ofIrene) son of Samuel and Agnes, was the only one of the first family whocame west. In 1859 Samuel purchased a farm near the village of DiamondBluff where they lived for many years. Samuel is buried in the littlecemetery about one mile from Diamond Bluff.

John Hunter and his wife later moved to Coomer, Wis. and are buried inthe Loraine cemetery. One record says John was married 9 Oct 1845 toRebecca Malet, so there was a second marriage to Anne, who is the motherof Albert, Harrison, Ted, Mary, Ann, Bell and George.

This information came from "The History of Crawford Co., Penn." by R.C.Brown in the Genealogical Library in St. Paul, also from things told byrelatives about their life in Diamond Bluff.

Samuel had a third son, Franklin, born after they moved to DiamondBluff. In their old age, Samuel and Ellen lived with this son and and isgranddaughter Myrtle Hunter Haggard. She lives in Harrison, Arkansas. She remembered things her Grandfather told her.
