Henry Burton would have left Maryland ca 1799. In the HISTORY OF TENNESSEE page 846, he is listed as an early settler in Dekalb County and also on page 849 he is listed as a justice of Dekalb County."

b.) Henry Burton came in 1799 from Maryland to Dekalb County, one of the commissioners to lay off Smithville. A Baptist preacher. On the night of his death he was unable to lie down, so sat up and quoted scripture and talked all night until he fell over dead. James Marion Baker was sitting up with him when he died.

"The Adj't Genl. reports him, as above stated. The late Capt. swears that was killed at Carthage, Tenn. April 28, 1864, while sitting by his tent talking with a comrade, being shot accidently by a soldier who was cleaning or oiling his pistol when the pistol went off, the bullet going into his temple and killed him instantly and that he was present in the camp and investigated the facts."
