Johnson Editing by Charles & Eleanor Johnson Counted among the first missionaries, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to preach the gospel in the old world was, Ole Olsen. His parents are unknown as well as his date of birth and we know nothing about his early boyhood. (Since this was written we have had extensive research done on this line. Ole's parents were Ole Jensen and Chatrine Pedersen. Ole was born 6 Oct 1812, Boeslunde Parish, Soro, Denmark. We have visited this beautiful old parish church and the cemetery next to the old church in 1995). Ole Olsen was born in Gettland, Denmark (research indicates that he was born at Boeslunde Parish, Soro, Denmark). When a young man he married Caroline Hansen. From this union four children were born: Maria, Katherine, Mary and a son whose name we do not know. (Research indicated that there were five children born to Ole and Caroline: Marie (Maria) bn 1839, Maren (Mary) bn 1841, Hans bn 1844, Kathrine bn 1846, and Niels bn 1849 d.1852 in Denmark). Ole was a prosperous and industrious man. He was a blacksmith and had twenty men working for him. Ole and Caroline had a big, beautiful home and servants. He and his wife heard the gospel preached by missionaries, accepted the gospel and were baptized. A short time later he accepted a call to preach the gospel in Norway and in 1852 he was thrown in prison for a period of one year for proclaiming the truth. The following paragraph was taken from a letter written by Elder Willard Snow, dated 10 November 1852: "Brother Ole Olsen had succeeded in opening up a new place and introducing the gospel into Onse Parish, near Fredrikstad, where he had baptized nine persons and many stood ready to enter in at the straight gate when he was forbidden by the magistrate to baptize and administer the sacrament. Brother Olsen manifesting an inclination to continue preaching and baptizing was arrested and imprisoned and has remained in prison ever since, although he has been examined before the court many times." The names of other missionaries who were also imprisoned were mentioned in the letter. It also stated that "communication with them has been forbidden, neither are they permitted to write to us." He served out his prison term and he and his wife immediately began making preparations to come to the United States. It was at this time that their lives were saddened when their little daughter, Mary, was kidnaped from them. One day, as Mary then eight years old was playing with some children, a strange man approached and told her if she wanted to see her father before he sailed away she would have to go to the boat immediately. Her father was very dear to her and she was anxious to see him. She said, "Let me go and tell mother." But the stranger replied, "No, there is no time for that." So she boarded the ship and found that her father was not there. She had been tricked into coming to America alone, without her family. -2- When Ole Olsen and his wife learned what had happened to their beloved daughter they were heart-broken and filled with anguish. They doubled their efforts to make ready to sail for America. They sold their business and everything possible to sell and the remainder of their belongings, which included many trunks of valuable linens , were given to relatives and friends. After many anxious weeks on the ocean their ship finally landed at New Orleans and Ole and his family, together with the other Saints, continued their journey up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri. When they arrived there was much sickness among the saints and they continued to search for some trace of their little girl. But, Ole, Caroline and their son, Hans contracted the dreaded Cholera and died, leaving the two young girls, Maria and Katherine to complete the journey to Utah as orphans (went with the other Scandinavian Saints). The Saints were kind and understanding and took care of the two sisters during the long trek to Utah. They arrived in Salt Lake City in 1854. In the meantime, little Mary had been brought to Salt Lake City and was forsaken by the people who stole her. She was badly treated, living with one family and then another. Many nights she had to sleep in a hay stack because no one wanted her in their home. Finally a Mrs. Davis, who was kind and affectionate, took her into her home and was good to her. It wasn't long before Maria and Katherine found their lost sister and all three of them were able to remain together and live in a true Latter-day Saint home. They grew up amid the hard times of pioneer days but they became faithful young women and mothers in Zion. Maria and her first husband, Peter Albert Nelson, built the first grist or flour mill in Iron County at Cedar City, Utah. Maria's second husband was George Bouncer Higginson. It's a question mark, but so far all we have. And the birth place is from a professional researcher in Danish Records that we hired in the 1970's and she went through the parish registers and identified that information. She could have been born in Feb. and then christened even months later....so there could be that discrepancy. I would definitely go after her Naturalization Papers in Elko County Court House if they lived in Nevada then....I can't locate them in the 1900 Census which is a big disappointment because that census gives birth month and year and is very, very helpful. One son, Louis is 24 in 1910 Census which would put his birthdate at about 1886 in NV; So they were probably in Nevada at least by that time. The Naturalization papers and application for naturalization will probably fill in many missing questions. In the census she also said she immigrated to this county in 1854 which is the information that we had also. Is Katherine the child that was taken in Denmark and was later found by her sisters???? Do you have any history on her, stories, etc. Is there an obituary on her? Lots of questions. Answer as best you can..........And when you get information just send it to me....I'm very curious what the naturalization papers may show us. Your husband and my husband would be related on the Ole Olsen and Karen Hansen line on back..........That's fairly close..........I'll have to figure it all out. Everything you had and I had seemed to go together. A couple things bother me though. One in the Missouri Archives it says that Ole was 39 he was more like 42. And I had Katherine's birthplace as Kobenhavn, Kobenhavn, Denmark. Both of those could be simple errors I guess. What do you think? Katherine was born 6 FEB 1846 in Denmark.
