CarpenterID: I07572 Name: Thomas IRELAND 1 2 1 3 3 2 4 5 Sex: M Birth: AFT. 1647 in Hempstead, Nassau, NY 1 1 4 5 Death: BET. 1710 - 1711 in Cold Spring, Nassau, NY 3 1 4 5 Note: [Robert coles.GED] Thomas was born after 1647 as he was not yet "one and twenty years of age" when named in the will of his father, dated 30 September 1669 (New York Historical Society Collections, 25:13) and is said to have died about 1710/11, probably at Cold Spring, Long Island (Ireland's Account,10). It seems likely that he married twice, but only the name of his second wife is known. James Norton Ireland referred to a sale of land from Daniel Ireland to his "mother-in-law" Mary Ireland (ibid.). He called this an error in fact when more probably it was the common colonial use of the term which we would now call "step-mother". This wife was Mary Abrahams as concluded from a deed of 26 June 1685 from Thomas Ireland to his brother-in-law Charles Abrahams (? from Hempstead TRs ). But in his notes William A. Eardley questioned whether Charles Abrahams' wife and Thomas Ireland's first wife might have been sisters (William A. Eardley MS, Ireland file;2, FHL film 416889). He places their marriage at 1674 without a source (ibid., 692). It's probable that she was the Mary Ireland whose death is recorded 13 November 1723 at Southold (Henry Hoff, Long Island Source Records from the NYGBR [Baltimore,1987],192). In February 1698, he exchanged his new dwelling house and lands apertaining, at a place called "ireland's Meadow", with Benjamin Burtsall, receiving from the latter 49 acres of land at Cold Spring, Oyster Bay, NY with other rights, and mowing privileges on Jericho plains. The Hempstead Census of August, 1698 lists Thomas and Mary Ireland followed by 9 presumed children as the census included "ye nams of all ye Inhabitants old and young, white and blacke " (NYGBR, 45:55 ). Another child was born after the census, as will be shown. Note: Last 3 children not listed in Week's Genealogy Thomas must have been a man of considerable importance in the community as he was, in 1678, authorized to draw for a lot and had other dealings with land. The public records of Hempstead, NY contain numerous references to Thomas Ireland, both the elder and the younger. In 1657, the number of cattle kept in the "Neck", "Thomas eirland, seaven." Gates at the Neck, Thomas Ireland 6. In 1657, Thomas Ireland had four cattle in the Neck. In the allotment of meadows, he had 19 acres. 1671 "and whereas Thomas Ireland, son of Thomas Ireland of this town lately deceased". Recorded for Thomas Ireland a parcel of land of 22 acres given by the widow of said Thomas Ireland. She makes over to her son Thomas the land. 1678, given a home lot, 3 acres. Pledge to pay for a preacher, yearly, five shillings. Plaintiff in damage suit which he wins. Thomas Ireland, the younger, when he died left a widow Mary and four sons and perhaps other children. November 17th, 1700, he received from Thomas Youngs, Jr., of Oyster Bay, for the consideration of 16 pounds, "and other good causes and considerations" 30 acres of land "within the pattent and old purchase of Oyster Bay, adjoining the highway to Huntington, on the west side, nigh unto Cold Spring." On the 17th of October, 1704, he and his wife Mary, conveyed to Edward Wright, Esq., a parcel or tract of land of about 14 acres in Hempstead, which he had purchased of Timothy Halstead. The census list of Hempstead for 1698 names Thomas and Mary Ireland and children John, Thomas, Mary, Adam, Daniel, Job, Amos, Elizabeth and Joseph.
