   Obituary for Alpha Butcher Garrison....

Alpha Butcher Garrison, 95, died March 21, 2003 in Cañon City. Alpha was born on Sept. 10, 1907 in Cimarron, Kans., to the late Jefferson Davis and Etta Maude (Morris) Butcher and was the youngest of nine children.
She went through school in Cimarron, then received a Life Certificate in Business and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University), in Emporia, Kans. She also attended the University of Kansas and Denver University.
Alpha taught in the Kansas schools for 17 years before she and her husband move to Cañon City in 1950, coming from Garden City, Kans., where she had taught. She met Robert Garrison in the early years of her teaching career. He was a farmer and eventually owned and operated 960 acres in Elbert, Colo.
Alphas summers and many weekends were spent with her husband at their farm home, which they both enjoyed very much. Robert retired from farming due to a heart attack that he suffered the last week of school the year Alpha retired from teaching. Alpha took over the management of the farm all summer. The wheat was all harvested and the ground all worked before Robert even got to see the farm.
She called him on the phone every day and drove to see him once a week all summer. Alpha was proud that it was an unusually good wheat crop that year. This was, no doubt, due to the help and advice of their caring farm neighbors and friends. Robert died in 1988, 58 years after their marriage.
Alpha was a teacher in the local Cañon City grade schools for 20 years before leaving the profession in 1970. She was a life member in the National Education Association and was very active in the Fremont Retired School Employees Association. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the United Methodist Woman and was an active member of the Evening Star Mission Group of the Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Christian Women group, AARP, and greatly enjoyed the community concerts and working with them.
After her retirement from 37 years of teaching, Alpha worked in the office of the Best Western Motel full-time and, later, part-time, for almost ten years. Later, she volunteered at the Tourist Cabin in Veterans Park and office work for Meals on Wheels.
She and her husband both loved to travel so they traveled extensively whenever possible, especially after her retirement. For the last one and a half years, Alpha was a resident of the Legacy Center in Cañon City, where she leaves behind her many wonderful friends.
Alpha was the last survivor of the Butcher family beside a sister-in-law, Willa (Neimer) Butcher, of Cimarron. She is also survived by six nieces and seven nephews and their families.
She was also preceded in death by six sisters, two brothers, two nieces and two nephews.
Visitation was held March 23 at Holt Family Funeral Home. Graveside services were held March 24 at Mountain Vale Memorial Park in Cañon City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fremont County Humane Society Shelter House, 110 South Rhoades, Cañon City, CO, 81212. Arrangements were made through Holt Family Funeral Home.

Last I heard from Aunt Alpha was 14 May 2001. She was at a place called Legacy, 1335 Bauer Lane #670, Canon City, Co 81212. Her nephew (don't know who this is) was keeping an eye on her. I sent her a christmas card
but it came back, I had the wrong address.
Love, Sandy
