There is not a definite connection as yet but two professional researchers have throughly researched the records in Mercer County, Penn and I am (Eleanor Law Johnson) still involved in research on these lines (1998 SLC). Years ago I found Elizabeth Clarkson & Richard in 1850 Census. They feel and I feel that Richard Andrew Law's mother or grandmother was Elizabeth Clarkson, who is in the 1850 Logan County Census with 18 yr old Richard Andrew Law. We feel we should go ahead and get the sealings done and any adjustments can be made in the millinium. ////////////////////////////////// BIRTH: Mercer County Naturalization Papers indicates that Richard Law, Jr. is a son of Richard Law from Ireland. Law and sons of Jason Andrew Law. He stated following....however, I believe this family is Irish and the German lines come in the Knisley & Eib family: "Richard Andrew Law's father died young (In his thirties.about 36) He was Penn. Dutch which is German.?? R.A.Law's mother remarried (note: Elizabeth Baker married Richard Clarkson) so that R.A.LAW did not know much about the Law history. Mother from Dublin, Ireland. Richard Andrew had three half brothers and sisters, two girls, one boy." (These half brothers and sisters would probably have been Baker children as there were no children born to Richard Clarkson and Elizabeth that I know of). Conclusion on the above ideas: So far, it is possible that there is a step brother. In 1840 Census, Logan Co.,Ohio Richard Clarkson has following information: 1 male 5 under 10 would be Richard Andrew Law. 1 male 10 under 15 could be one of Elizabeth's sons from other marriage to Baker.. 1 male 30-40 fits Richard Clarkson's age. 1 Female 40-50 fits Elizabeth Clarkson's age. HISTORY The story I heard from Uncle Richard Law (my fathers brother) was that Richard Andrew Law's father died young and that his mother remarried. The notes indicate that Elizabeth Clarkson and Richard Clarkson were in the deed records of Mercer County, Penn. prior to their buying property in Logan County, Ohio in 1837. Also there was an old piece of paper that was given to me that said 11 children by Baker and 1 child by Law. There were no children born to Elizabeth and Richard Clarkson. And they divorced in Logan County, Ohio 1852. So, it is assumed that she was married to a Baker before Law. There is a William Baker next to her in the Logan Co.,Ohio 1850 Census. She may have been a Baker and had the 11 children before being widowed or divorced, remarried a Law and had one child, then he died (?) and she remarried to Clarkson (who was much younger than her). An early piece of evidence or clue was a piece of paper (old) that there were "11 children by Baker, one child by Law" This was on an old piece of paper that my father had given to me. There is a William & Malvina Baker in Logan County, Ohio in the same census of 1850 Logan Co,Ohio Bokes Creek Twp. next to Elizabeth Clarkson age 60 Bn Va and Richard A. Law 18 (my great,grandfather).....Possibly one of Elizabeth Clarkson's children from first marriage. If he were throughly researched, it is very possible that much more information could be found on Elizabeth Clarkson, if she is indeed the mother of Richard. We do not know her maiden name.... (In divorce records from Logan County, Ohio Richard Clarkson stated that he was married about 1835 in Mercer County,Penn to Elizabeth or Betsy Baker...it is possible that she took her Baker name back before she married Clarkson). OBITUARY Richard A. Law was born in Mercer County, Penn.,Apr.2, 1832. He moved with his parents to Logan County,(Ohio) in 1836, thence to Putnam County (Ohio) near Kalida in 1849.(Note: he is in Logan Co. 1850 Census) In 1852 he was married to Sarah Jane Holden, who has been the companion of his joys and sorrows for the past fifty-four years. Two children and ten grandchildren along with his aged companion live to mourn the loss his loss. He united with the United Brethren Church when he was 21 years old and afterwards with the Church of Christ in Bryan(Ohio) in 1888 where he moved in 1876. Since 1902 he resided in Edgerton until the date of his death which occured last Friday evening at 6:30 o'clock. He was a faithful Christian and a noble man and we deeply mourn his removal from amoung our midst, fully realizing that in his death we have indeed sustained a great loss. J.H.O Smith, of Valaparaiso, Indiana, officiated. Mr. Smith spoke words of comfort in loving kindness and sympathy to the wife, children, and grandchildren, whom mourn the absence of a loving husband and father. This is a true copy by P. Mildred Steckley...Donald W. Houk, Editor. ///////////////////////////////// 4-20-91 Uncle Dewey Law is visiting with my father here in Las Vegas. He is very old but says he believes the name of Richard Andrew Law's father was Andrew. We will have to check that out as I've ask for information for years and years and that is the first time that I ever heard that. There is an Andrew and many Andrew Law names in the Mercer Co,Pa area...an Andrew, son of Richard Law and Ann Hunter that married an Eliza Ann. I do not attach too much to this information as yet as researchers do not agree with this conclusion.

There is good news along with, I'm sorry to say, some "not-so-good." Let me start with the good news. I don't know where you are, if you live in a city or out in the country, but I want you to know that where Elizabeth is buried is some on the prettiest countryside I have seen in a while. It was such a beautiful day and I am happy to say that I found the cemetery in very "well kept" condition. The website where I found the cemetery listed said: "The grass is routinely mowed; however, vegetation covers some monuments in the late spring and summer. Many of the older monuments are in need of repair." However, we found the cemetery freshly mowed and only spotted one headstone with weeds around it and this was a big batch of poison ivy. I kept my distance, as I am very allergic to ivy. There aren't many graves in the cemetery and it didn't take us but a few minutes to locate her grave. Her grave is in the old section, the last row. As we stood at her grave and looked at the fields beyond the gravesite we counted around 14 young geese in the field directly behind cemetery. Was a very pretty sight to see. Well.... I guess I need to get to the "not-so-good" news now. I'm not sure how you will take this but I was very saddened to find her headstone in the condition that we found it. It looks as if at one time it stood on a base at the head of her grave. Now it lays in 3 pieces, the base, the lower 1/2 and the upper 1/2 of the marker. The upper 1/2 has her name, wife of R. Clarkson, and the date of her death (all but the year), the lower 1/2 has the year and says "abt 60 years." As I said.... I took a couple pictures for you but my uncle isn't sure that they will come out... the headstone was very worn and very hard to read. I hope that once I get the film developed I find that you will at least be able to make it out. Once I get the film developed I will scan and email to you (I'm not sure how soon this will be, I still have quite a few pictures to take on this roll) and if you would like, I can mail the actual pictures to you. By the way, the only Baker I found in this cemetery was an Oliver W. Baker, d 12 Jul 1851, ae 2y 1d (Son of I. & R. Believe she was married to a Baker and we don't really know her maiden name yet. She dies in 1855 in Logan County,Ohio and is buried there," Elizabeth Clarkson, wife of R. Family tradition: According to a small piece of paper that had been handed down by the Law family to me: 11 Children by Baker 1 Child by Law She may have been married three times: 1) Baker of Mercer County, Pa, 2) Law of Mercer Co, then 3) Richard Clarkson of Mercer County, Penn., and Bokes Creek Twp., Logan Co., Ohio. Richard Clarkson was also on property with her in Mercer County where they sold out about 1837 and bought property in Logan County, Ohio one month later. He is found to be paying taxes in Logan County in 1838 and is also on the 1840 Logan Co. Census in that township with 1 male 5 under 10 (fits Richard Andrew Law's age), 1 male 10 under 15 (fits age of a child by Baker husband...child may be William Baker...he was in 1850 Census next door to Elizabeth), 1 male 30-40 (which would be Richard Clarkson) and one female 40 under 50 (which would be Elizabeth Clarkson). She moved into that county about 1836 according to family history given by Richard Clement Law (my uncle)and on Richard Andrew Law's obituary. Find that there is a legal dispute between Richard and Elizabeth Clarkson in Logan County, Ohio. Find that Elizabeth and Richard Clarkson are divorced in Logan Co.in November 1852. I feel quite sure that his mother was Elizabeth Clarkson, age 60 in the Bokes Creek Twp. Logan County, Ohio 1850 Census where Richard A. Law was listed with her, he being age 18 born Penn. She was an Elizabeth or Betsy Baker before marriage to Richard Clarkson in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, according to Richard Clarkson's statement in divorce petition....he did not mention a Law name. The divorce of Richard Clarkson and Elizabeth in Logan County, Ohio, was finalized in Nov.1852. Years earlier my father handed me a small piece of paper that had hand written in pencil: 11 children by Baker, 1 child by Law. I have found evidence of Baker children being in Logan County, Ohio...which I believe to be connected to Elizabeth Clarkson. William Baker who married a Malvina Cline and Sarah Baker who married a Samuel Cline. Research is on-going in checking out Cline names as a back door approach to finding more regarding the mother, Elizabeth Clarkson. Also, William Baker who was in 1850 Census, Logan Co., Ohio right next to Elizabeth Clarkson. Uncle Richard Law stated that Richard Andrew Law's father died when he was young (Richard Andrew Law was only about 2 or 3 yrs old when the mother remarried to Richard Clarkson in Mercer County,Penn about 1835) and that he didn't know much about the Law ancestry. He said there were half brothers and sisters, which is indicated by another male child besides Richard and older than Richard in the 1840 Census of Logan County, Ohio Census (Richard Clarkson as head of household....I believe that the other male child in the 1840 Census may be the William Baker, possible son of Elizabeth, listed next to Elizabeth in 1850 Logan Census.) In all the years of searching, we have no direct evidence of Richard Andrew Law's father. However, Colleen Johnson has made a through search and has come up with a conclusion that it is very possible that his fathers name was Richard and that his parents were Richard Law and Ann Hunter who imigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland in 1819 (Naturalization Papers from Mercer County, Penn). Although this is circumstantial evidence, this line has been researched by myself and more recently by Colleen Johnson (Mrs.J.McRay Johnson, a professional researcher, of Bountiful, Utah)(also by Ruth Mannes and Wilma Atkins of the Family History Library). Until we have more definite proof, she thinks we should go ahead with what has been gathered....she has done a through job of trying to put it all together and so have I and so has the other researcher I had hired. Conclusion: That Richard Andrew Law's father was Richard Law, the son of Richard Law and Ann Hunter, from County Tyrone, Ireland and that his mother was Elizabeth (maiden name not known)who was married to a 1)Baker 2)Law 3)Richard Clarkson. (as yet Elizabeth's maiden name not known...she is stated as being born in Virginia about 1790...according to 1850 Census..Logan County, Ohio). All the other membership books dated back to 1924, so I was surprised to find this book that had 1800's and early 1900's. And sure enough their names were listed. I assume that since the record indicates that they were "lost" by "letter" (I take that as a letter of transfer) that they transferred to another congregation. Unfortunately it doesn't indicate where they may have gone. You will see that there are marginal notes for other entries indicating death or moving away, but nothing is written by the Law names.
