Military: from above listed book: "When he manifested his patriotism during the Civil War, he enlisted in August of 1862, in Company F, one hundred and eleventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was made made a non-commissioned officer. After one year's service, he was placed on detached duty in the engineer corps.
He participated in the Battle of Murfreesboro in the seige of Knoxville. as well as several other skirmishes. His experience was remarkable. He was saved from Guerrilla bullets and rope while serving as a recruiting officer in East Tennessee, in the organization of Black troops. He was successful in the rescuing of three comrades from a watery grave, taking them from a frail skiff in the Holston River while it was at the high water mark. When his term of office had expired, he was honorably discharged and returned to his family in Milford Township" (Ohio)etc.
From above book, sketch written by a granddaughter, Mrs. Albert Thiel..."He was a good husband, a loving father, and was loved by all who knew him. He was a diligent reader of the Bible and a great believer in his God. He attended the United Brethren Church of Hicksville. He was buried in Forest Home Cemetery, beside his good and faithful wife, Eliza."
