HISTORY
History 9-26-1990. My father, Ted Law, told me that his father died at Ashwood,Ohio...6 miles from Defiance after an accident where he was using dynamite to clear tree stumps from farm land. His eyes were blown out, and his body broken. He was carried to a farm house near the scene of the accident and only lived a short time.

Dad said that she was an artist and all her paintings were burned in a fire...she never painted after that evidently.

SKETCH ON LIFE
My Note:Eleanor Law Johnson's thoughts about Grandma Law:  
She was a wonderful Grandmother to me and always loved me and showed the greatest love and respect for children.  I remember her sweet dieposition and her kindness to me when I dropped a piece of her fabulous custard pie.  She handed me the plate with the pie on it and I then tryed to sit on a stool that was too high for me and off slid the pie onto the floor.  I began to cry.   She didn't get upset with me  but she comforted me and gave me another piece of  pie that was even a bigger piece. I remember that as if it were yesterday.  
        She was a woman of God, read the Bible every day, went to her church (Christian Scientist faith), observed the Sabbath and lead a life in Christ in following his example.  She lived in a second story apartment at Meta Street in Ventura....My Dad said she lived at Meta and Thomsen..I remember that later on she was  living in  another home, on a ground level, near shopping and one of main streets in Ventura.  She has had a great impact on my life in her righteous example and kindness to me.  I esteem her greatly as a precious part of my past. (1999)

Hit by car....died about 6 months later as a result of the injuries from the accident.

Elderly Woman Critical In Accident
        Mrs. Edna Law, 86, Ventura is in a critical condition at the County Hospital today after she was struck by a car at California and Meta Streets at 7:30 lst night, Ventura police reported today.
        Police reports show Mrs. Law was struck by a car driven by William H. Chambers, 56-year old Camarillo state Hospital employe.
        According to investigating officers, Chambers attempted to pass a car which had stopped at the intersection to let Mrs. Law and a companion, Mrs. Delia Borders, 76, cross the street.
       Police Officer Robert McMahon said Mrs. Law was knocked about 50 feet by the impact.
       Chambers was cited for passing another vehicle which had stopped for pedestrians."

Coroner's Jury Holds Inquest into Death
       A coroner's jury went into deliberation at 11:00 today in the inquest into the death of Mrs. Edna C. Laws, 86
Ventura. 
        Mrs. Laws died Tuesday from injuries allegedly \suffered when struck by a car Oct. 6.  Testifying at the inquest were William H. Chambers, Camarillo state Hospital attendant and driver of the car that hit Mrs. Laws.  .Ventura  policeman, Robert McMahon, James Cox, Ventura, and Mrs. Delia Borders, Ventura, who reported she was walking with Mrs. Laws when she was struck.

Negligence Found In Crash Death Case
       A coroner's jury yesterday found that negligence on the part of William H. Chambers, 56 year old Camarillo state Hospital employee, caused automobile injuries which contributed to the death of Mrs. Edna C. Laws, 86, Ventura, Tuesday.
         Mrs. Laws was struck by Chambers' car at California and Meta streets last Oct. 6.  Mrs. Laws was confined in a local hospital until her death Tuesday.
         Chambers testified at the inquest yesterday and stated that he did not see Mrs. Laws in the cross walk until his westbound car had struck her.  He estimated his speed at about 25 miles an hour.

Grandma Law....to keep warm or to keep legs from swelling, she would wrap them.  When I visited her, she always liked to make creamed tuna.
Orpha lived with grandma after Bill died.
In 1937 Dad got a new Ford...would pack up pots and pans and sell them...they'd put them in suit cases.
Modesto....Turlock farm....went to see Bill and Orpha.  They paid no attention to Bev just to the twins.
Dad & Mom had home parties and they'd cook dinners and sell Silver Seal pans (later Guardian pans).
Dad was really close to his mother...
Old truck had windows...Brown, lined w/ cork so meat would stay cool.  No window, plexa glass and he'd take us in that over to see grandma on the Ranch near Modesto or Turlock.
Grandma Law was an artist and all her art work burned up in a fire (I think in Detroit,Michigan).
She never painted again that I recall.
Chinese checkers...Aunt Orpha didn't like to lose.
Don't remember any more about Grandma except she was a sweet old lady.  I remember Dad coming to the dorm at Pepperdine and telling me she had died.
Don't remember cuddling.....neither grandma did, perhaps it was the time period they lived in.
Our mother was loving.

Hi Ellie,
       I so remember this time in our lives when grandma Law was in the hospital.  I remember being by dad's side as he wept over her right after the accident.  No one thought she would last another day but she was truly amazing.  I 
remember visiting her in the hospital ward and wondering how long she would have to stay there.  She was so sweet and humble and kind.  She smiled through all that pain so many times.  Daddy just adored her and I hope he is enjoying being with his family now, and especially his father and mother.  That must have been quite a reunion.    This really made me cry to think of the pain she had to endure with the loss of our grandfather and then this.  I always remember that she loved and hugged us and made us feel very special.

         My father, Ted Law, had told me Orpha was buried at Ivy Lawn Cemetery.  But, on 3-14-96  while visiting at the cemetery office, they could not find any record that stated that her ashes were interred with her husband or her mother.  They stated that she had been cremated there, but the ashes picked up or taken by Theodore T. Law and his wife....who had made the arrangements..  My parents, Ted & Dorsa Law, never spoke to me regarding the scattering of her ashes but that may be what happened....unless the cemetery records just didn't record the burial.  The cemetery office stated that they have no record that she's buried with anyone else.  Her husband, William Matthews was not cremated and is buried at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park   D-5-204

Sent above information to Linda Little and Gail McCrate...Orpha's granddaughters.

Mel Near told me that there was a bitter divorce between Orpha & Edward Near......

1999 Law Reunion:  Helen Swindler Rennell. my cousin,  said that Ed & Orpha lived with Richard and Ethel......That Ethel raised Orpha's children:  Bob and Olive Near.... Orpha wasn't around any more.....went west.  I remember seeing them at Ethels.....Helen also said that she married one of her husbands twice....she thought it was Matthews.

Your-darling Christmas card and note, I received so much happiness, you'll never know.  I had a lovely holiday this year. Jean and Robert always send me a nice box, lots of gifts, the most precious, is home made fruit  cake and
three nice bottles of real perfume.  Jean, Robert and three children sure am proud of them, your family also, and Leona and family in Columbus, Ohio my step daughter a graduate, nurse in 1931 Mrs. Harry Kennedy of Bell 
Calif. always remembers me on every holiday, Marvel Taff (Teff)? of Alameda,  Calif. an adopted cousin your Grandpa Laws sister Aunt Geneva, was a music teacher and later years she had her own millenary shop in Edgerton, Ohio. That  was before you came to this world. 
        Am-glad you like your new home, and I know is much more fitted to you and family so much more free life.
I always loved the country I loved to bake pie, cake, bread, doughnuts and etc. I also loved horses., cows all animals I started to milk a cow at 6 years so I always loved the out door work too.  Oh-dear, time goes so  fast as ne-grows older.  Feb. 18th will be here before I know it.  Is it possible, my 71st BD?  I just can not keep from remembering dates.  Your grandpa (great) his 100th BD the 7th of Feb. He sure was a man to be groud of.  he was a Black smith, in Canada. Jean and Robert sent me a lovely photograph of them. Robert has white  hair at the temples a fine looking couple.  It is on my stand by my bed.   this is the only way I an able to visit.  My best Love to Olive, Roland, Linda  & Gail.

PS:  My hair is gray; not white yet.

Opal also married Herman Strouse who had been married previously, wife died and left him with 7 children. Opal took those children and raised them with all of hers. She divorced Strouse due to his drinking but raised all the children and put them through Edgerton, Ohio High School. They all thought the world of her. Opal never remarried after that.

Unknown father: had one child Leona Patricia . Leona (Pat) considered Gordon her father and corresponded with him.....
According to Helen Swindler Renell 8-7-99 She said that her mother, Opal, said that William Francis Gordon was not the father of Leona. Opal never told who the father was. She was embarrassed about her mistake and did not disclose who the father was. Gordon evidently stated that he was the father of Leona. No one really knows for sure.
NEED to send for Birth Certificate...

Herman Strouse built the house that burned at Christmas time 1937....children accidently set the fire...one of his kids was playing with matches. They got out with their lives and that was about all that was saved.

JASON LAW RITES SLATED SATURDAY
Funeral services for Jason N. Law of Santa Margarita, who died at a local hospital Thursday, will be conducted in the chapel of the R. F. Richardson Funeral home Saturday at 2 p.m. by Dr. Freerick J. Hart, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.
Commitment services will be held and interment made in the Lawn Memorial cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Law is his widow, Mrs. Naomi M. Law of Santa Margarita; his mother, Mrs. Edna C. Law of Ventura; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Matthews of Ventura, Mrs. Opal Strouse of Edgerton, Ohio, three brothers, Theodore T. Law of Los Angeles, Dewey D. and Richard C. Law of Detroit, Mich.

Interviewd in my home 10-10-90. He again told me the story of the special experience he had after his father died. He appeared to him, all dressed in white, about three days after he had died. Uncle Dewey cried like a baby when he related the story.

MARRIED: "At Esther's sister's home, Art & Ivy Macintyre, 152 Windemere, Highland Park, Michigan. The house is gone.... now it is a freeway."

1991....Living in Las Vegas, NV spring 1991 with my father, Theodore T. Law...Sun City...He again related the story of his father's appearance after his death and cried. Bless his sweet soul, he is so tenderhearted about that event in his life. He suffered so much when his father died and he longed to know where he was and that is why I'm sure Heavenly Father allowed him that manifestation.

"As a child I remember hearing of Jason Law. You know he was a stump blower...dynamite sticks were used. He met his death by the unexpected explosion and as I remember, he was blown to bits. Then Dewey Law stayed at Mary Johnson's (note: I believe this is Mary Farnsworth Johnson that was a sister of Ellen Maria Farnsworth, which would be Dewey's great, aunt) and went to school with me at six corners one winter. I was Beulah McCollough then. Really enjoyed him. Often have wondered about him, where he went."
