June 1993 Trip into Woodstock, Vermont....Find a Farnsworth's buried in So. Woodstock (Adams Farm Cemetery) on the back of property owned by Michael J. Fox (TV & Movie Star) in So. Woodstock. Update 11/2000 Fox no longer owns the property. Right of way thru this property to the cemetery. Many graves no longer have markers, have been broken off. Jonathan Farnsworth (son of Stephen & Eunice Farnsworth) and others are buried there. Possible that Oliver and wife, also other family members are in that cemetery. There was a flag on Jonathan's grave honoring him for Revolutionary War service.

September 26,27,2000 trip into Woodstock. In Town Clerk's office we were helped by a man, Stephen Johnson, an attorney and title searcher.... that was also searching the records. He spent over an hour doing a title search for us and located the property that is now in the hands of: Tina & Don Gilbert..... Mrs. Gilbert took us clear through
he house and into the basement to see the half-hewn logs that made up part of the house. She wants to know everything I can find out about the house and the people who lived there.

"Several of the children of Stephen and Eunice Farnsworth settled in Woodstock. Two of these, Jonathan and Stephen, have been mentioned already. Still another was Oliver, born at No 4, December 8, 1742, being the first child born in the "Old Fort." (in Charlestown,New Hampshire). He purchased four hundred and twenty acres of land situated in District No. 9, of which he received a deed the 4th of June, 1773, and he must have occupied this land soon after, as his name appeares among the list of town officers chosen at the annual meeting held the following spring. From that time onward he was elected to various offices in the town, and as his house occupied a central and convenient position, town meetings were called there frequently, as many as seven in succession being held at this place from August 14, 1780, to April 8, 1782. At one of these meetings, held March 14, 1781, it was voted that no sled should be suffered to run in the highway less than four feet wide, "swithout it is a going on a journey."2 About the 1st of November, 1785, Mr. Farnsworth was taken sick and died, and his death was felt to be a great loss to the infant settlement. His estate was divided among his six surviving children. The homestead was occupied in later times by Benjamin F. Mack."

"1773 Joab Hoisington elected Town Clerk, and held the office till 1778, when Oliver Farnsworth was elected.1"
1 Joab Hoisington died about February, 1777. No records of Town meetings for that year. At March meeting, 1778, Oliver Farnsworth was chosen town clerk.

HI Ellie,
Oliver did NOT serve in the revolutionary war that we know of. His name is on a DAR momument and Smith's Gazateer says that he received land in Solon, NY for Revolutionary War services, however this is not correct. He was a LT. in the French Indian War in 1757. He purchased the land in Solon. I have recently submitted papers for a DAR supplemental line. There is a record of his making tents in CT in 1781.
Love,
Tommie

Hi Tommie,
I think that it is extremely interesting that our Oliver b1796 (g.son of Oliver b1742) was evidently living in Cortland County when his son, Milo, was born. (from my time line on Oliver b1796...In 1822 21 Aug 1822 Birth of son, Milo R. Farnsworth, born in Homer,Cortland,N.Y. source: Milo R.Farnsworth's death record: Death Records in Cresco,Howard,Iowa for Milo R. Farnsworth.) Solon is in Cortland County...
Do you suppose we'd find any family information on Abijah and Betsey in Cortland County, NY????This property that you mention below may have stayed in the family.....I always wondered why Oliver was clear
over there, his grandfather had land over there. Now, isn't that an angle to look at
Love, Ellie

Good Morning

In your research have you located any information on Oliver or his wife Elizabeth?? After Oliver's death in the Woodstock area it appears that Elizabeth was remarried to a man named NORTON. In DAR records it states that
Elizabeth dies in her 98th year of life and that the NORTON was a REV
with the possible first name of William.

Do you have any idea who Moses Wheeler's parents were??

In the Woodstock area have the old cemeteries been inventoried?? Are there any records of who is buried where??
Like always, full of questions.

About a year ago I transcribed numerous articles on Cuyahoga and Portage counties, OH, from "Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve" published under the auspices of the Woman's Department of the Cleveland Centennial Commission in 1896, edited by Mrs. Gertrude Van Rensselaer Wickham. The articles contain many details about the lives of the early settlers.

Euclid

Euclid, the suburb of the beautiful Forest City, first felt the thrill of civilization penetrating its forests and invading its sparkling streams in 1803, when Asa and David DILLEE moved into their log house, one-half mile west of
Euclid Creek. The latter was widower when he married Mary SAYLOR, and moved from Washington County, Pa., to Dillees Bottom on the Ohio river, nearly opposite Wheeling, Va.
The two Mrs. DILLEES, who were sisters, traveled from the latter place on horseback, each carrying a child in her arms and one behind her on the horse. The last twenty-five miles of the way there was only a bridle path, and trees had to be cut down to make a road for the wagon, taking twenty-five days to make the twenty-five miles.
In this new home the most generous hospitality was extended to strangers, especially to ministers and soldiers; the
women often sitting up all night to mend clothes for the soldiers who stopped there during the war of 1812.
The first Presbyterian Church was organized and several children were baptized in this home. One of the Mrs.
DILLEES died at the home of her son, Israel DILLEE, an eminent lawyer of Newark, O., at the age of seventy years.
Cynthia, daughter of David and Mary DILLEE, learned to spin and weave, and at an early age became famous for the excellence of and rapidity with which she did her work. At the age of eighteen she began teaching school, doing the family weaving during her vacation. She married Havilah FARNSWORTH and settled about three miles from her birthplace. A number of years later she moved to Iowa, where she died 1875.
Her daughters were Mary Ellen, Abigail and Miranda. The latter became Mrs. Sardis WELCH, and settled near her
birthplace. Her daughters were Harriet (Mrs. Hezekiah AVERY) of Euclid, now deceased; Eliza (Mrs. HADDEN), who resides with her son Alex HADDEN, Esq., of Cleveland; and Marian (Mrs. Pulaski CAMP), of Evarts, Mich.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteeth day of May Anno Domini 1811.
Abijah Farnsworth (looks like initials are inscribed after his name).
Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Abijah Farnsworth to be his last will and Testament in the presence of us who haveunto subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of the Testator and of each other.

At a court of Probate hold at Woodstock, within and for the said District on the seventh day of July, being the first Tuesday of said month in the year of our Lord 1812. The forgoing was presented as the last will.

CEMETERY:
June 1993 Trip into Woodstock, Vermont...Find a Farnsworth Cemetery in South Woodstock, area in back of property owned by Michael J. Fox (TV & Movie star)(by 2000 Fox no longer owns property). Right of way is thru his property. Do not find a stone for Abijah but many of the graves no longer have stones..can see where broken off.
Jonathan Farnsworth, brother of Oliver, is buried there. He was in Rev.War and his grave was decorated.
Think this was a family graveyard and many other Farnsworths are probably buried here with no stones to mark graves..

Dear Ellie-

Well, the mailman brought me a great package today Hartford Probate Court in Woodstock, Vt. sent me the entire probate file for Abijah Farnsworth. I paid $10 for it.

I don't know if you only had the will, or the entire probate record. There is also a document in the probate records naming guardians for the following children who were not yet "of age" which, according to the documentation,
was 14 years of age. An individual named Bezer Simmons was named guardian to Betsey Farnsworth, Abijah Farnsworth (the one who has you stumped) and George Sampson Farnsworth, minors under the age of fourteen years and heirs to the Estate of Abijah Farnsworth. This guardianship occurred in April 1815, so the mother Betsey (Peck) Farnsworth must have passed away.

I also received a list of all of Abijah's household good (including spinning wheels, bed sheets and pillows and a looking glass).
I will try to get you a good copy and send it along when I can. Hope all is well with you.
Margaret

Dear Nancy,
Thank you for checking this out for me. You are a dear person
to do all that you do and I so appreciate it as I'm such a long way
from Woodstock. Please tell me what I owe you on this.
Sincerely,

I found a short piece on Oliver Farnsworth. Elizabeth is only mentioned as his wife. I found nothing on Elijah Norton. If he moved to another county nothing would show up in the sources I have mentioned. You may want to contact the Vermont Historical Society in Barre, Vermont.(60 Washington Street, Barre, Vt 05641. 802-479-8500) I am very sorry I could not help you more and good luck with your search

Hi Tommie,
I think that it is extremely interesting that our Oliver b1796(g.son of Oliver b1742) was evidently living in Cortland County when his son, Milo, was born. Do you suppose we'd find any family information on Abijah and Betsey in Cortland County, NY????This property that you mention below may have stayed in the family.....I always wondered why Oliver was clear over there, his grandfather had land over there. Now, isn't that an angle to look at

Dear Don,
It was so nice to speak with you this morning regarding this
problem I am having finding anything on Betsey Peck or on the
marriage (approximately 1795) of my 3rd great,grandparents:Abijah
Farnsworth and Betsey Peck.
The Farnsworth's were Protestant as far as I know and my hope is that
I can find an early church record where it mentions their marriage..

As I mentioned, the Farnsworth line goes way back to the 1600's in
England, so I have that line. But, "BETSEY PECK" is another story.
The only source I have on her full name if a Farnsworth Family
History written by Nathan Farnsworth (unpublished). The only
document with her name is the will...and that is just Betsey
Farnsworth.....

I do appreciate any information that you can help me with...
Most sincerely,
Eleanor L. Johnson
