HOLDEN, HARRISON COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA 26 SEP 1859 In the name of God Amen. I, Alexander C. Holden of the County of Harrison and State of Virginia calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous of disposing of all such worldly estate, as it hath pleased God to bless me with. 1st - I give and bequeath the same in the manner follwing that is to say I give Article 1st After the payment of my debts and funeral expenses out of my own personal estate, I give to my wife Sarah Holden all notes, bonds and amounts given in her name or belonging to the Estate of J.L. Cross deceased. I also give my claim to my wife Sarah which I hold by marriage in her life-time right to the real and personal Estate without any liabilities to my Estate also two beds bedding & bedsteads, one Bureau, one cook stove, two cows, one calf, two sets of plates, two dishes, one set of tea cups and saucers, one butter plate, one cream cup, one sugar bowl, one stew pot and 1 twelve gallon pot, four crocks and 1 jar provided she settles each child's legacy left them by her former husband's will and relinquishes all claims to my real and personal estate according to our Solemn & mutual agreement before our matrimonial contract, but every article including a side saddle which she brought with her is to be restored, also a carpet book called Christs legacy. 2nd - I give to my son Benjamin D. Holden all notes and accounts I hold agaisnt him for loaned money with interest amounting to one hundred twenty dollars and fifty six cents. 3rd - I give to my daughter Eliza Barnett in addition to our set the house and lot on which she now lives and as it is now enclosed together with the shop and two notes of hand, one note calling for five & the other nine dollars it being loaned money with the interest thereon provided no account for blacksmith work be brought against the Estate therent of shop and lot was to offset blacksmith accounts. 4th - I give to my son William W. Holden the horse called his, the waggon and gears & all farming utensils likewise the house or houses & farm on which I now live, not otherwise disposed of in my will. 5th - I gave to my son George S. Holden when he left this state, what I thought was his proportionably part, namely a mare worth Seventy five dollars, a waggon and gears worth thrityfive dollars, a saddle four dollars, an axe one dollar, and nineteen dollars in money. I now hold a note on him for twenty dollars for money loaned him which I will to him with accounts due from him to me. 6th - I give to my daughter Ann Jemina Morrow exclusive of her outset one heifer which she has lately received. I also give her the meeting house field (so called) as it is now enclosed. 7th - I give to my daugher Sabra A. Corley exclusive of two young heifers my bed and bedding, my desk, my kitchen table and my bedstead. And whereas I hold notes against William Corley one calling for thirty one dollars on which there is a credit of twelve dollars, one for sixteen dollars and one for five dollars amounting in all to forty dollars exclusive of interest thereon all or any part thereof not needed or used during my natural life I bequeath to my daughter Sabra A. with the interest on the same. One bed I bequeath to Sabra A. contains two pillows, two pairs of pillow slips, or cases, 2 sheets, one coverlet, one blanket, the residue of bed and bedding & belonging formerly to her mother deceased, descends to Mary Catherine. 8th - I give my daughter Mary Catherine Holden my bureau, a bed and bedding (now called her bed) and bedstead, one cow, a falling leaf table, and pot metal. Also the field below the house & Turnpike road & adjoining the Creek likewise all the chairs, plates, 2 servers, and my little room to stay in while she remains unmarried. 9th - And lastly all my property not othewise disposed of, to be sold and equally divided among all my children excepting William W. Holden who has his full proportion assigned him in the will. And finally I do hereby constitute and appoint my friend John Ryan & my son William W. Holden both of the County of Harrison and State of Virginia aforesaid my executors of this my last will and testament - hereby revoking all others as wills & testaments by me heretofore made or given. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this thirteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five. A.C. Holden of the County of Monongalia and State of Virginia, being desirous of making some alterations in the following Articles of my will and testament to wit: 1st - In addition to the 1st Article, I do give to my wife Sarah Holden all my present claim to one cow and one yearly steer. 2nd - In addition to the second Art. I do give to my son Benjamin D. Holden the sum of ten dollars, five dollars of which he has received since the making of my will. Also my watch if I have one at my death. Also sixty one dollars to be paid him by my son William W. Holden either in money or its value in property. 3rd - In addition to the 4th Article, it is my will that my son William W. Holden pay to my son Benjamin D. Holden $61.00 two years after my decease in money or its value in property. Also that he pay to my daugher Sabra A. Corley the sum of $44.00 two years after my death. 4th - In addition to Article 6th in which I willed to my daugher Ann Morrow the field called the meeting house field, having since made an exchange by Article of Agreement with Aaron Barnett for 4 acres of land including the house lying on the opposite side of Elk Creek from where the said Barnett now lives - commonly known by the name of the Polly Knight place, adjoining land of Lee and Martin, I will to her & her children forever. 5th - In regard to Article 8th Whereas I willed to my daughter Mary Catherine the field below the dwelling house & turnpike road and adjoining the Creek called the bottom field, I hereby revoke and give the same to my son William W. Holden and in exchange for which I give to her twelve acres of land lying above the M House and Browns Creek road commencing at the corner of the fence that divides the M House field from the hill field running thence with said road until it reaches not less than 15 poles beyond the bluff of the big hollow provided it does not exceed the boundary of 12 acres by running nearly a straight line to the back line of said tract and with said line to the fence aforesaid and with said fence to the beginning corner. Lastly all my personal effects not otherwise disposed of if I have any at my decease, I wish to be equally divided among my four daughters. Finally I do hereby constitute my son William W. Holden and Charles Holden both of County of Harrison and State of Virginia aforesaid my executors of this my supplement to my last will and testament hereby revoking all other supplements if there be any made by me. Holden married Aaron Barnett, 18 Feb 1836 Harrison Co., Va Source: Marriage Bond Records of Harrison Co.,Va by correspondance with Clarksburg, WV Public Library... #2 Aaron & Eliza Barnett name their first child: Drusilla. Source: 1850 Census...Harrison Co., Va Aaron Barnet and Eliza & family listed with children, one of which is: DRUSILLA 13 Va./ (b.1837) I don't think you'd name one of your children Drusilla, as it didn't seem to be a common name, unless you were naming that child after a relative. (Drusilla must be married by 1860 Census as she isn't listed with Aaron and Eliza in that census). #3 Find Drisilla Barnet (the elder one) listed with the the Alexander C. Holden household 1850 Census Harrison Co.Va: Drusilla Barnett Bn Penn age 74. He probably had her live with them after he lost his wife in 1848. She only lives two additional years, as we find her buried at: Center Branch Cemetery, next to Center Branch Church, near Clarksburg, Harrison, W.Va.
