14 April 2003 Mrs. Lynn Oryall, Library Director Santaquin Public Library 20 West 100 South Santaquin, Utah 84655 Dear Mrs. Oryall, I spoke to you on April 3rd and you ask me to send you some information regarding my husbands lost grandfather, Charles Johnson, who was a miner in the Tinic Mining District in the late 1800's. He married Sarah Celestia Higginson in Salt Lake City on 12 November 1898. She was the daughter of George Bouncer Higginson and Maria Olsen. Charles Johnson and Sarah C. Higginson had one son, Valdemar Eldridge Johnson, bn. 8 September 1899 in Santaquin who was my husbands father. All his life, Valdemar tried to locate his father who left the family (deserted them according to Sarah Celestia) when he was only a very small child. And all my husband's life, he has also researched or had researchers trying to find Charles Johnson, the miner. To this time we have not found him. Recently we have felt prompted to begin all over again and look at this problem from a different perspective. Perhaps in this way we can be led to some clue, no matter how small, that will help us locate this lost ancestor. Yes, it is a difficult problem since the name is such a common one, but with faith, we know that the answer is somewhere and we are certainly willing to turn over any new piece of evidence in trying to locate him. I feel that possibly the Higginson families may have records, old letters, pictures, notes, scrapbooks, obituaries, etc that may help. Or perhaps your library may have records that we can search. You mentioned some records that you may have in a "special collections" box..... 1- I would like to purchase the book: Pioneer Families of Santaquin Utah 1851-1899 and enclose a check for $30.00...hard back. 2- Also, do you know where an obituary notice would be for: Maria Olsen Higginson D. 18 Apr 1905 in Provo and is buried in Santaquin... Any thoughts or ideas on what records may be available in Santaquin and Eureka would be sincerely appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you with any suggestions you may have. Sincerely Charles & Eleanor Johnson 2629 Youngdale Drive Las Vegas, NV 89134 702-804-4943 ******************************************************** Question: If Sarah C. Johnson was married again to 2)John Ford Eugene Ford was their only child...........When she died, is it possible that some of her possessions were in the hands of that family??????? April 3, 2003.....contacted Elaine Ford.Richardson........in care center in Provo......she said, no there wasn't any information....and said she'd have her sister contact us.....as of 23 April we have not heard anything.... ********************************* Death: Nil Have never found any records on him after he was last seen by his son, Valdemar, about 1904. See many files on Charles Johnson, mining engineer, in possession of above. Of interest are the witnesses at the wedding...two prominent attorneys that may have known the family. Family tradition was that he was from the Omaha area, that he had a father or relatives in the judiciary. He and Sarah Celestia had a falling out due to the fact he wanted to move on. She didn't want to leave her sick mother. Extensive research has not unveiled this line..Colleen Johnson has spent hours and hours and we have also....perhaps it is for our decendants to find this line as more records become available. We have poured over records. There was a Charles Johnson in Toole but we don not know for sure if he is related. Have met with the family out there and tried to tie it together. Found them through Martin and grandma doing some research and going out to Toole Court House and finding the woman at the desk had a grandfather, Charles Johnson. She put them in touch with the family of that Charles and they interview them. Seems that Charles had worked in the mines also. NOTE 3-26-03....Charles had DNA to see if he matched up with people in Tooele....and it wasn't a match...... Spiritual experience given to Eleanor Law Johnson by Valdemar Eldridge Johnson, who had been deceased since 1969. Time: about February 1982 in St. George, Utah while Charles was in a Priesthood Session at the Temple and I was at the motel where we were staying. It is written in my journal. It was to the effect that "the father I did not know in life is my best friend in death. Poor dirt farmers from Omaha area..Believe from Denmark. Much work to be done. It is like a needle in a haystack...But grandpa said, "gather the family together....get them to pray and help you (which we did, fasting and praying). Nothing is too hard for the Lord...it will come in a miraculous way." Martin believes that he got the answer when they found the Charles Johnson in Toole. Colleen does not think it is the same man. (update.....2002 DNA tests with Charles and a Johnson in family out in Toole revealed that there was absolutely no connection.....Charles paid for both tests). 3-16-99 It is time to claim the blessing...we are here in the library every day and Elaine Hazelton is helping us. Yesterday she had the same inspiration that I did.....Eldridge name in census....we must pursue this. 7-11-88 I have been praying and working on this line. I awoke with the name "Newton" on my mind. I looked in the atlas and found a town by the name of Newton in several states surrounding Omaha.Nebraska (Iowa (H5) & Illinois both had Newton in the counties of Jasper. There is also a Newton, Kansas. 7-12-88 After our walk, Larita Schmutz and I started going over the map, which we are now doing, trying to find Newton in Canada also. I feel that I should go to the library and see if I can locate any Johnson names in Iowa in or around Newton, Jasper County, Iowa and do the same in the other states mentioned. I know the answer will come if we do our part.

Sarah Celestia Higginson evidently left no records to our knowledge, no letters, no pictures, nothing of this marriage. Tradition: The story goes that she married Charles Johnson. He was not a member of the church as far as we know. They had one child, Valdemar Eldridge Johnson. We have found no Valdemar or Eldridge names on her side of the family thus far. Have come to believe that there certainly may be those names on his side of the family, which to this point we are still trying to locate. (5-10-93). Long ago I found some Valdemar names as a surname in the archives in Salt Lake...Royal names from Denmark, I believe. Sarah Celestia was ask by her husband to leave the area, but the story goes that she did not want to leave her mother who was sick. In the divorce record it said he deserted them....I just don't know what really happened between them as we only have one side of the story and there is always two sides. Grandpa said that he saw his father for the last time when he was only about three or four years old and that he was tall man. He was not found for the divorce proceedings or not found to be in the state as far as they could discern. WITNESSESS TO THE WEDDING: We have done some research on the witnesses to the wedding in Salt Lake City. Charles Johnson told Sarah Celestia that his father (or relatives) was in the judiciary....which may or may not be true. But, at any rate, George Goodwin was a witness and was a judge in Salt Lake. Is this the reason they came to Salt Lake to be married...that he had friends here. We have information that there was an attorney Johnson in the same area of South Dakota for a time where George Goodwin used to live. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF SARAH CELESTIA HIGGINSON JOHNSON FORD Written by Valdemar Eldredge Johson September 1957 Revised & edited by Eleanor Law Johnson 22 April 2001. Sarah Celestia Higginson was born at Goshen, Utah County, Utah, 2 November 1874, a daughter of George Bouncer and Maria Olsen Higginson. She had one brother, Eugene Bouncer and one sister, Francis Mary Higginson and ten half brothers and sisters. She was the last to survive in her family. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was eight years of age and enjoyed the customs of those days. The family moved to Santaquin, Utah and it was there that she received her schooling and spent her girlhood days. She was active in the organizations of the church that prevailed at that time and she often mentioned the good times she had with her associates. At the time of her birth the pioneers had been in Utah only 27 years and the settling of this territory was still in its infancy. She saw many changes during her life time and was always interested in reading of the things that were transpiring. On 12 November 1898 she married Charles Johnson in Salt Lake City. He was from the Omaha area and a mining engineer in the Tinic Mining District of Eureka, Utah. One son was born to them, Valdemar Eldridge Johnson, on 8 September 1899 in Santaquin, Utah. She is found living with her mother and child in the 1900 Census in Santaquin, Utah and her husband is not listed with them. There must have been differences between them and sadly their marriage ended. The story is told that he wanted to move on and she didn't want to leave her ailing mother. According to statements she made in the divorce proceedings in Provo, Utah, he abandoned the family. He was not present at those proceedings and so only one side of the story is known. Whatever the whole truth is, it is a sad story. To this day, Charles Johnson remains a mystery in the family. Although much research has been done, his true identity is yet to be found. (Year 2001) . In 1906 Sarah Celestia married John Ford of Wallsburg, Wasatch County, Utah, a farmer and cattle rancher. They had one son, Eugene Ford, born 4 June 1910 in Provo, Utah. At an early date, about 1912 or 1913, she and her husband planned to take up a tract of land in the Uinta Basin which was being homesteaded at that time. But, their plans did not materialize and they continued to live in Wallsburg until about 1919 when they moved to Provo. They acquired a home and 61 acres of land near the Utah County Infirmary between Provo and Springville. They lived there until 1923 when the Provo-Springville Holding Company purchased the land and water rights for the Ironton Works of Columbia Steel Company. They then moved to 354 South 4th West in Provo (6th Ward), which was her last established home in Provo. She was a slender, beautiful woman and possessed a jovial and congenial spirit. She had some wonderful sterling qualities, among them were neatness and cleanliness. She was a perfect housekeeper, her home her castle. She was an outstanding genealogist. She knew the lives and history of all her kin and she loved to relate their lives and what they were doing and had done in the past. Her relatives were her most prized possessions, she loved them all. Her relatives and friends were always welcome in her home. She was a wonderful cook and she loved to share good food with others. She possessed the simple virtues of life, she loved picnics and family gatherings, hay-rack parties which were held on the shores of Utah Lake and which were, at that time, the recreation resorts in Utah County. She loved to relate how her father was converted to the church in Great Briton through Parley P. Pratt and later came to America where he became on of the first Seventies in the church. He was with Apostle Pratt preaching the gospel in the state of Arkansas at the time of the Apostle's assassination. George Bouncer Higginson gave Parley his last drink of water. Sarah Celestia was faithful and prayerful throughout her whole life. She never missed saying her prayers and she taught the principles of truth and honesty and lived them by her example. There could not be a more devoted mother. She was grateful for her heritage and she loved this choice land of America. She loved the Prophet Joseph Smith and Hyrum and she knew and understood their privations and persecutions. All of the leaders of the church were revered by her. She never took outstanding parts in the church but she loved the Savior and she understood the eternal principles of the gospel. She loved the missionary work of the church for she knew what a great part the missionaries had taken in her heritage. Her grandfather, Ole Olsen, was one of the first missionaries to preach the gospel in Norway in 1852 and 1853. He was cast into prison for preaching the gospel. In recent years she was thankful to have one of her grandsons, Charles William Johnson, fulfill a wonderful mission in East Germany. She died Monday morning at about 2:45 a.m. on 16 September 1957 at 290 East Center Street, Provo, Utah and is buried in the Provo City Cemetery. She is survived by her two sons, nine grandchildren, and two great, grandchildren. Note: Martin Johnson, a grandson, also filled a mission in New Zealand. And all of Charles sons and one daughter have filled missions for the church. Another decendant,a 2nd greatgrand son is presently serving a mission in Guatemala. .

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Served in Utah Legislature about 1948. . OCCUPATION: Geneva Steel Mill Worker Insurance Salesman. (~) Confidential note: Not to be shared outside of the family due to the nature of this sacred event: Revelation to Eleanor Law Johnson in St. George, Utah 1982 while Charles was in a Priesthood session in the Temple. I had been working on the Johnson genealogy and was praying about what I was to do on that line: (Journal entry about Feb. of that year, I believe). Grandpa Val Johnson:: "My father I did not know in life, is my best friend in death,Born to poor dirt farmers, outside of Omaha (area)Denmark.Much, much work to be done. I ask Grandpa Johnson..., how are we to find him? Grandpa: "There are records (Bible) that will come into your hands in a miraculous way. Leave no stone unturned. Gather the family in so that they can fast and pray and be apart of this effort." May 3, 1997 update...we have worked on this for years, left no stone unturned that we know of, fasted and prayed. Hired a professional researcher, Colleen Johnson (David's mother-in-law), etc. The family could be more involved. Martin Johnson feels that the answer was the Toole Charles Johnson. Presently (Mar 1999) working as Family History Missionaries in Salt Lake City working with Elaine Hazelton on this line...Charles has been so diligent. Someone will find the answers....one who is prepared to go the distance on this line and take it beyond what others have done. So much can happen when the time is right and faith that the Lord knows the answers and will reveal them in his own time. . ELJ 9/8/99 Newport Beach,California Dec. 2002 update.....DNA on Charles Johnson and a member of the Toole, Utah Johnson family proved that their father was not the father of Valdemar......there was no DNA match............Charles is disappointed.....
