Here is what I know. Elizabeth "maiden name unknown" married a William Baker and divorced him June 25, 1833 in Mercer County Pennsylvania (I have a copy of their divorce record if you want it). I believe they had
a son named Havey Baker who lived in Delaware Twp. Mercer Co. Pa in 1850. In 1850 Harvey Baker is living right next door to a Andrew Law (brother in law?) Harvey is 34 and Andrew Law is 45. Here is what the census says
Harvey Baker 34 born Oh
Catherine Baker 31 Pa
William Baker 11 pa
Simon Baker 10 Pa
Jackson Baker 8 Pa
Cordelia Baker 4 Pa
Joseph Baker 2 Pa

Andrew Law 45 Ireland

   Wilson A. Law 10 Pa
   James A. Law 7 Pa
   Andrew A Law 5 Pa
   Thomas M. Law 3 Pa
   Lorina Thompson 17 Pa

Later on Harvey and Catherine had children named Abraham, Christopher, Elizabeth, and Susannah and Mary.
I lose track of Harvey and Catherine Baker after 1880 and don't know if they died in Mercer Co Pa or moved away? Possibly to Logan Co. Ohio? Have you seen these names anywhere?
Thanks for the info and I will look for the family in Ohio. Do you know the names of Elizabeth Baker's children? What else can I tell you ? Let me know.

Write soon and thanks again.

Hi Jeff,
I don't know if she married a William Baker but I wouldn't discount it....she could have. I believe that she named one of her children William Baker. He shows up next to her in the 1850 Logan County, Ohio Census bn about 1827 in PA. I don't know if they had a son named Harvey (but could have).
I don't know Elizabeth's maiden name but do know that she is in the 1850 Logan County Census, age 60 (b.1790) in VA. She divorced Richard Clarkson in Logan County,Ohio. She died 15 May 1855 in Bokes Creek Twp.,Logan County, Ohio and is buried in Good Hope Cemetery in the same area. " Elizabeth Clarkson, 15 May 1855, about 60, wife of R (full name of husband not spelled out)"
Notes from file:

   DIVORCE: Logan County, Ohio 1852
1852 November... Divorced from Richard Clarkson.. he would be 46 yrs old, she would be 62 if 1850 Census information correct. Both agree to keep their own property separate of each other. In divorce petition he stated that they " married in Mercer County, Pennsylvania about 1834 or 1835 and that her name was Elizabeth or Betsy Baker. Believe she was married to a Baker and we don't really have her maiden name as yet.
I would like to know if you could share the information on Harvey. Does he fit in with this time period we are talking about?
Do you know of any BAKER BIBLES? The answers are somewhere....just hope we can connect this some how. There was an old piece of paper that said, 11 children by Baker, one by Law. And I believe it had William and Ann Law on it......Does that mean anything to you? Let me know.
   Thanks, Ellie Johnson

Hi....

My name is Bev. I got your address at HeadstoneHunters.com. I have pinpointed the grave site of Elizabeth Clarkson, although I have not been there yet to get you a picture. I plan to do so as soon as I can after receiving a reply from you. I just want to make sure this email address will still reach you before I make the drive.

I have not registered with HeadstoneHunters as a volunteer yet, I first wanted to try finding a couple headstones to see how successful I was and how time consuming it was. I guess you could say that you and another person were my test projects. I haven't had any luck with the other person yet but I'm still trying.

I grew up in Logan County, OH but now live in Clark County, OH. All of my mother's family live in Logan County so I still visit there quite often.

I found that your great-great grandmother's grave is located in or around West Mansfield, OH. Although I'm not real familiar with this area, I have an uncle who is and I'm sure he would love to go with me to obtain a picture for you.

I sincerely hope this email reaches you and that I get a response from you.

Sincerely,
Bev......

Hi Bev,
My name is Ellie (Eleanor Law Johnson)....I'm delighted to hear from you and would so appreciate a picture of the gravestone. I know that Elizabeth Clarkston is buried in the Good Hope Cemetery, Bokes Creek Twp.,Logan County,Ohio....in the old section, I'm sure. I saw a book in the genealogy library that had the following:

Good Hope Cemetery Record 977.1463 V3b 1855 Good Hope Cemetery, Bokes Creek Twp, Logan Co.,Ohio " Elizabeth Clarkson, 15 May 1855, about 60, wife of R (full name of husband not spelled out)"

I'd be curious to see if there is a Baker grave close to her as she was a Baker before marriage to Clarkston. Just if you have time.

Thanks so much for writing....I'll certainly look forward to hearing about what you and your uncle find next time you are in Logan County. You're so sweet to want to help me out. Thanks again.
Sincerely, Ellie

Hi Ellie,
Just writing to let you know that I got you several pictures, a couple of Elizabeth's headstone and a couple of the cemetery.
There is good news along with, I'm sorry to say, some "not-so-good." Let me start with the good news.
I don't know where you are, if you live in a city or out in the country, but I want you to know that where Elizabeth is buried is some on the prettiest countryside I have seen in a while. It was such a beautiful day and I am happy to say that I found the cemetery in very "well kept" condition. The website where I found the cemetery listed said: "The grass is routinely mowed; however, vegetation covers some monuments in the late spring and summer. Many of the older monuments are in need of repair." However, we found the cemetery freshly mowed and only spotted one headstone with weeds around it and this was a big batch of poison ivy. I kept my distance, as I am very allergic to ivy.

There aren't many graves in the cemetery and it didn't take us but a few minutes to locate her grave. Her grave is in the old section, the last row. As we stood at her grave and looked at the fields beyond the gravesite we counted around 14 young geese in the field directly behind cemetery. Was a very pretty sight to see.

Well.... I guess I need to get to the "not-so-good" news now. I'm not sure how you will take this but I was very saddened to find her headstone in the condition that we found it. It looks as if at one time it stood on a base at the head of her grave. Now it lays in 3 pieces, the base, the lower 1/2 and the upper 1/2 of the marker. The upper 1/2 has her name, wife of R. Clarkson, and the date of her death (all but the year), the lower 1/2 has the year and says "abt 60 years." As I said.... I took a couple pictures for you but my uncle isn't sure that they will come out... the headstone was very worn and very hard to read. I hope that once I get the film developed I find that you will at least be able to make it out.

Once I get the film developed I will scan and email to you (I'm not sure how soon this will be, I still have quite a few pictures to take on this roll) and if you would like, I can mail the actual pictures to you.

By the way, the only Baker I found in this cemetery was an Oliver W. Baker, d 12 Jul 1851, ae 2y 1d (Son of I. & R. Baker)

Sincerely,
Bev......

Ellie, Haven't forgotton about you. Went last week to cemetery. Her stone was broken and tipped over but still readable. Got several photos for you and am waiting for film to be developed. She was way back in the first or second row of the original area. She must have been one of the first ones buried there. Many of the other older stones were unreadable, so figure we were lucky to find hers in as good of shape as it was. Will snail mail phots to you when developed. Best regards, Ann in Ohio

NEED TO FIND HER BIBLE>>>>May be in possession of Baker children.....Do not believe that it came into the hands of Richard A. Law......Never heard that it did.
ALSO NEED TO SEARCH DEEDS IN LOGAN COUNTY,OHIO

Temple work done under name of Mrs. Elizabeth Law if looking for ordinance work accomplished.
Also known as Elizabeth or Betsey Baker; Elizabeth Clarkson....

RESEARCH CONCLUSIONS & BACKGROUND
Find ELIZABETH CLARKSTON Age 60 (1790) Bn Virginia, with my great grandfather, RICHARD LAW age 18 bn Pa (I believe she is his mother) in 1850 CENSUS of Bokes Creek Township, Logan County, Ohio..
Do not know if her husband (Richard Clarkson) was in that county at that time...believe they were separated by then. They were divorced in November 1952...in divorce petition he stated that they married in Mercer County, Pennsylvania about 1834 or 1835 and that her name was Elizabeth or Betsy Baker. Believe she was married to a Baker and we don't really know her maiden name yet. She dies in 1855 in Logan County,Ohio and is buried there," Elizabeth Clarkson, wife of R. (name of Richard not spelled out).
Family tradition:
According to a small piece of paper that had been handed down by the Law family to me:
        11 Children by Baker
         1 Child by Law
She may have been married three times: 1) Baker of Mercer County, Pa, 2) Law of Mercer Co, then
   3) Richard Clarkson of Mercer County, Penn., and Bokes Creek Twp., Logan Co., Ohio. Richard Clarkson was also on property with her in Mercer County where they sold out about 1837 and bought property in Logan County, Ohio one month later. He is found to be paying taxes in Logan County in 1838 and is also on the 1840 Logan Co. Census in that township with 1 male 5 under 10 (fits Richard Andrew Law's age), 1 male 10 under 15 (fits age of a child by Baker husband...child may be William Baker...he was in 1850 Census next door to Elizabeth), 1 male 30-40 (which would be Richard Clarkson) and one female 40 under 50 (which would be Elizabeth Clarkson). She moved into that county about 1836 according to family history given by Richard Clement Law (my uncle)and on Richard Andrew Law's obituary.
Find that there is a legal dispute between Richard and Elizabeth Clarkson in Logan County, Ohio.
Find that Elizabeth and Richard Clarkson are divorced in Logan Co.in November 1852. It's interesting that Richard Andrew Law marries Sarah Jane Holden just one month earlier in Putnam Co.,Ohio. But, Elizabeth Clarkson dies in Logan County in 1855.................

BIRTH:
1850 Census, Logan County, Ohio...stated that she is born in Va. age 60 (bn: 1790)
1840 Ohio Census Bokes Creek Township,Logan County pg 1, line 15..
Family History Library 977.1 A1 no 649
Males: 1 5-10 (which would fit Richard Law's age)
1 10-15 (Believe this son to be William Baker, a son of Elizabeth Baker before marriage to Law).
              1 30-40 (Husband, Richard Clarkson's age...bn 1806 34 in 1840))
Female 1 40 under 50 (which would fit Elizabeth's age of approximately 50 yrs according to 1850 Census which stated she was 60 in 1850))
.
COURT RECORDS: Property disputes

DIVORCE: Logan County, Ohio 1852
1852 November... Divorced from Richard Clarkson.. he would be 46 yrs old, she would be 62 if 1850 Census information correct. Both agree to keep their own property separate of each other.
In divorce petition he stated that they " married in Mercer County, Pennsylvania about 1834 or 1835 and that her name was Elizabeth or Betsy Baker. Believe she was married to a Baker and we don't really have her maiden name as yet.

DEATH
Good Hope Cemetery Record 977.1463 V3b FHL/SLCity.
1855 Elizabeth died in Logan Co.Ohio.
She died 15 May 1855 and is buried in Good Hope Cemetery, Bokes Creek Twp, Logan Co.,Ohio " Elizabeth Clarkson, 15 May 1855, about 60, wife of R (full name of husband not spelled out)"

Clarkson, Elizabeth, d 15 May 1855, ae abt 60y (wife of R. Clarkson)

The record that ties Richard Andrew Law to Elizabeth Clarkson is the census record and also the family tradition that his father died young and that his mother remarried.
Also note that in 1880 Census...Richard Andrew Law stated that his mother was born in Virginia....This varifies her statement in 1850 Census as to the state she was born in.
The 1880 Census stated that his father was born in PA......he may not have known for sure where his father was born.
