Hope I haven't got people mixed up. Zachary Wade was born about 1627 in probably Warwickshire, England. He died in 1678. Zachary Wade settled in Maryland in 1641 as a servant of Mistress Margaret Brent. He was employed by Col. Giles Brent at Kent Fort Manor on Kent Island, Maryland. He remained on the island after the Brents were ejected in a land dispute by William Claiborne in 1644 and then returned to the Brent's service after Claiborne was ejected in his turn in 1647. Wade's Point, on Eastern Bay, below Claiborne, is so called from its first owner Zachary Wade, one of Claiborne's Kent Island colonists, who crossed over from Kent Island to Talbot in 1758 and took up a tract of 400 acres (1.6 km2) upon which he settled. He later lived at Newtown, St. Mary's County and served as Margaret Brent's steward at St. Gabriel Manor in St. Mary's County. He was settled by 1661 on land near the mouth of the Pomonkey Creek in Charles County that he bought from Winganatto, King of the Nanjemoys. He became a lawyer. He was a member of the Maryland Assembly and served as sheriff and justice of Charles County. He was sent by the Assembly on a mission by ship, probably to Virginia, to procure a copy of the statutes of England. He held more tha 5,100 acres of land in Queen Anne's, Talbot, Charles, and Prince George's County. He was married to Mary Hatton. In 1650, he was attorney for Thomas Bradnock of the Isle of Kent, who brought to the court at St Marys his troubles with Edward Hudson, age 25 years, who claimed that he had hidden (for security) "in the Corne Loft of Mr. Bradnock a parcell of peese, a Kacke of Sope, and also a bottell of Vinegar, also a parcell of Shott." (Born 1652-1653) In March 1675, Mr. Zachary Wade and Mr. ffrancis Pope were named Justices for the Peace for Charles County. Zachariah and Mary also had four children who died before their father: (Records of Births, Deaths & Marriages as found in Charles County, Maryland, Chancery Records, Liber P, No. 1, 1688-1689 & 1687-1759, Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin): Mary Wade, daughter of Mr. Zachary born 01 Apr 1661 died 21 Jul 1661 Sarah Wade, daughter of Mr. Zachariah born 07 Jul 1662 died 17 Aug 1662 Edward Wade, son of Mr. Zachary born 02 Nov 1670 died 02 Aug 1671 William Wade, son of Mr. Zachary born Nov 1673 (THE WADES-A HISTORY OF A FAMILY, Zada Wade Beadles, 1963, excerpt, (WADE WAID WAIDE.) Zachariah Wade probably came to Maryland from Warwick, England. He undoubtedly was related to, perhaps a brother of, Dr. John Wade whose undated will was proved in Maryland on 04 September 1658. Zachariah (Zacharias) Wade was named by Dr. Wade to be the administrator of his will and also was a minor heir. The principal legatee of Dr. Wade was his son, Edward Wade, who received all of the property belonging to testator and his wife Mary which was given to them by Edward Attkins of Chilvercoton in Warwickshire, by will or by deed of gift. This suggests that Mary, wife of Dr. John Wade, was a daughter of Edward Attkins. Edward Wade probably was the son of Dr. John Wade. Zachariah (Zachary) Wade of Charles County, Maryland, died at a relatively young age since his three surviving children and heirs were not parents when he made his will on 05 March 1677/78. It was proved on 25 May 1678. To eldest son Richard, he devised 550 acres named Limme and Limmes Enlargment, 400 acres called Wadeson and Wadesons Enlargement, half of 1050 acres known as Locust Thicket, which Zachariah Wade and his brother (in-law) Randolph Hinton bought from Thomas Brookes, and land at the head of Piscataway Creek. Son Robert Wade was left a 600-acre portion of the tract called Market Overton, 500 acres known as Forest Green, 350 acres on Piscataway Creek named Stony Harbour (Harbor), and 200 acres identified as Friendship. Daughter Theodosia was bequeathed the rest of Market Overton and land on the eastern branch of Piscataway Creek which he and his brother (in-law) Luke Gardner, had taken up. He made a bequest of personal property to Mary Hinson. The residue of his estate was given to his three children and, if any should die without issue, their share or shares were to go to the survivor or survivors. If all three died without issue, the estate was to be divided among the sons (unnamed) of his brother-in-law Randolph Hinson and the son (unnamed) of William Hatton. Brother (in-law) Randolph Hinson and William Hatton were appointed executors and the will was witnessed by Abraham Sapcoate, John Guyott and Richard Hodgson. Page 19 Zachary represented Margaret Brent as her attorney in her dispute with the Calverts. In 1647 the new Maryland colony was in crisis. Protestants had revolted against the Catholic government and seized control of the colony. To preserve Maryland as a refuge for Catholics and safeguard his family's interests, Governor Leonard Calvert hired mercenary soldiers from Virginia. Lacking hard currency to pay them, he pledged his estate and that of his brother, Cecilius Calvert (Lord Baltimore, the proprietor of Maryland), as security for their wages. But just as his soldiers put down the revolt, Governor Calvert died, plunging the government into disarray, without authority or funds to pay the restless mercenaries. On his deathbed Leonard Calvert named Thomas Green to succeed him as governor but entrusted his personal estate to a prominent landowner, Margaret Brent. Telling her "I make you my sole Exequtrix. Take all, pay all," he left the resolution of the crisis in her hands. This information taken from the will of ZACHARY WADE: 3381, page 53; 3377, page 222; 3318 MD 23 Church record; 3381, pt 1, page 256. ZACHARY (Zachrias) was born in England and immigrated during or before 1657 to Charles Co., Maryland. ZACHARY WADE immigrated from England to Kent County, Maryland before April 1647, married Mary Hatton, and moved to Charles County, Maryland, by 1661. Descendants and relatives lived in Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia and elsewhere. INFORMATION FROM LDS FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY IN SLC: ZACHARY WADE (sometimes referred to as ZACHARIAS WADE) came as an immigrant to Maryland, was Executor and presumably the younger brother of Dr. John Wade, the brother of Wm. Wade, Cecil, Warwickshire, England. (Ref.:LAND PATENTS: Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland) ZACHARY WADE was owner of extensive lands in the Province of Maryland--in Charles, Talbot, Prince Georges, and other counties. He first appeared on record as chosen to represent New Town, Charles County, at the first Assembly of Maryland, held at St Leonard's Creek, April 7-20, 1657. Again he held public office, from 1662 until his death in 1677, as one of the "Gentlemen Justices" or Commissioner of Peace of Charles County. Zachary married Mary Hatton (died 1678), daughter of Richard and Margaret Hatton. Lands held by ZACHARY included 400 acres called "WADE'S POINT" in Talbot County on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, sold to William Leeds in 1665, At his death, he owned various parcels of land totaling close to 3,000 acres as listed in his will. There is a monument in Washington D.C. on 15th Street between Constitution Avenue and East Street, erected by the National Daughters of American Colonists, April 25, 1936, "To the original patentees prior to 1700 whose land grants embrace the site of the Federal City." The name of ZACHARY WADE is among those listed, followed by the date, "1670." Will of ZACHARY WADE (1627-1677) CHARLES COUNTY WILL BOOK 9, P.16: ZACHARY WADE, CHARLES COUNTY., MD. 5 March 1677-25 May 1677 "To eldest son, Richard and heirs, 550 acres Linne and Linnes Enlargement; 400 acres Wadeson and Wadesons Enlargement, and half of a 1050-acre tract called Locust Thicket being land bought by testator and brother Randolph Hanson, from Thomas Brooks. Also land at the head of Piscataway Creek. To son, Robert and heirs, 600 acres, part of Market Overton; 500 acres Forest Green; 350 acres Stony Harbour, on Piscataway Creek, and 200 acres, part of Friendship. In event of death of all children without issue, estate to be divided between brother-in-law, Randolph Hanson's sons and William Hatton's sons." Executors: Brother Randolph (Randall) Hanson, William Hatton. ZACHARY WADE devised to his son, Richard Wade the following tracts: 500 acres called Linnes (Simmes, Semmes), 400 acres Wadeson, and half of a tract of Locust Point, a tract of 1060 acres bought with his brother-in-law, Randolph Hanson. References in will to following lands: Piscataway Creek (in first paragraph) must be the land called WADE'S ADVENTURE. Piscataway Creek (for Theodosia Stone) must be a half of 780 acres called Good Luck or Brother's Purchase. The "remainder" referred to for Theodosia Stone would amount to 600 acres; Market Overton was 1200 acres, and 600 acres were left to Robert, above.
