Noble VAN METER
1870 U. S. Census, Waverly P.O., Benton Twp, Pike County, Ohio: Noble VanMeter, age 51, M W, Farmer, born VA; Ellen VanMeter, 51, F W, keeping house, born OH; Catherine A., 23, F W, keeping house, born OH; Mary E., 18, F W, keeping house, born OH; John, 16, M W, farm labor, born OH; Lydia S., 13, F W, attending school, born OH; Charles A., 10, M W, farm labor, born OH; Elizabeth M., 8, F W, attending school, born OH.
Joanne Eustice, Two Brothers from New Jersey, p. states that John I. VanMeter, II, son of John Marshall VanMeter, had two wives, the first of whom was Emma Parker. The problem with this is that the obituary of Sanford VanMeter, in 1962 Waverly Herald states that his parents were John I. VanMeter and Emma Parker, but neither the obituary of John Marshall VanMeter (Scioto Gazette, 1925) nor that of John Inskeep VanMeter, II (Scioto Gazette, 1924) disclose that John Inskeep VanMeter, II had any wife other than Nellie Decker Vause. So without further proof that John I. VanMeter, husband of Emma Parker and father of Sanford S. VanMeter was the same person as John Inskeep VanMeter, II, husband of Nellie Decker Vause, I am going to leave the two families separarate for now. It also is a possibility that Noble VanMeter descends from the family of John VanMetre (the Indian Trader, and brother of Isaac VanMetre (killed and scalped at Old Fields in 1757)).
