Obituary, Shelby Sentinel, p. ___, Friday, November 12, 1948: age 71, prominent farmer of Shelby County, died at home on U.S. 60, three miles east of Shelbyville, after an illness of more than a year; native of Winchester, son of the late Lewis Marshall and Ann Moore VanMeter; family moved to the Mulberry neighborhood and owned the farm now belonging to Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Taylor; had lived for past forty years on the farm where he died; graduate of the old Central University, Danville [sic], member of Presbyterian Church; survivors: wife, Elizabeth Hickman VanMeter, daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Wright, Los Angeles, CA, Mrs. Frank B. Obituary, The Shelby Sentinel, p. 8, Thursday, October 12, 1967: "Mrs. Ben S. VanMeter, Sr., 89, a former resident of Shelbyville, died last Friday in Lexington where she had made her home for sometime.
"Mrs. VanMeter was possibly the oldest living alumnus of Science Hill School. She was a member of a prominent family and will be remembered by a host of friends throughout the county.
"Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Howard Tilson, Lexington, Route 7; Dr. Elizabeth V. Wright, Brea, Calif., and Mrs. Frank B. Nelson, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and two sons, F. Marshall VanMeter, Lexington, and Ben S. VanMeter, Jr., Springfield, Pa.
"Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday from Milward Broadway Mortuary, Lexington. Burial followed at 3:15 p.m. in Grove Hill Cemetery."
