Samuel CHAMPNEY
The records of Samuel Champney and his father are listed in detail in thegenealogy of Richard Champney. Cambridge birth records list "SamuelChampne, son of Richard and Jane born Sept.__ 1635." In fact this dateshould probably be 1636 or 1637 since his sister Mary was born October1635. His father Richard didn't arrive in America until October 3, 1635so the birth date is probably wrong. Samuel Champney moved toBillerica on a 500 acre farm his father had purchased from EdwardCollins in 1655. Around 1668 he moved back to Cambridge. He took partin King Phillip's War in 1675.
He and his wife resided in Cambridge on the west side of Holyoke Streetin the home formerly owned by his father Samuel and grandfatherRichard Champney. This house was built by William Wadswith, aselectman in Cambridge in 1634-35. Wadswoth went with ThomasHooker to Connecticut in 1635. In 1637 Wadsworth sold the house toRichard Champney who lived there until his death. The Champneys (all ofwhom were named Samuel) lived there probably through the Revolution. In 1731 (April 28) a petition was filed by his wife Hannah and his sonSamuel, Jr. for guardianship of the father "who has lost his reason."Samuel Champney was judeged to be incapable of managing his ownaffairs and Samuel, Jr. was appointed guardian on April 29, 1731. He isburied in the Old Burying Ground near Harvard Square in Cambridge.
