Cornelius DU BOIS
Cornelius learned the trade of cooperage, but it is doubtful that he ever worked hard at making barrels or anything else. He took possession of his father's estate which was apportioned to him as early as 1760. It was a noble inheritance of at least 600 acres. His last days were of poverty by comparison with his early life. He was so careless in financial matters, lending money too freely and unwisely. He also paid large sums to take up forged notes of his eldest son Benjamin. About the year 1789 he sold his house and lands to Jacobus Bogardus. Whle he lived another 15 years, further mention of him ceases in the records.
This might possibly be father of Lawrence Knickerbacher DuBois Lowrens, bap Dom. Scheuneman, O.C. Ch., Aug 23, 1755 Wit. Isaac and Lana Sammons; m. Ester Van Valkenberg, Green County, N.Y. Lived in Greenville, Greene County, NY and was probably a tanner. Have little knowledge of him from the fact that he early left Catskill
