Benj. F. VanMeter, Genealogies and Biographical Sketches, p. 57, gives name of one son of Solomon C. VanMeter and Maria Cox as "Edwin P." but 1850 U. S. Census, Dist 23, Hardy County, Virginia includes   "Ed Payson VanMeter, age 4, born VA" in household of Solomon C. VanMeter (age 28, farmer, born VA).

In 1870 U.S. Census, Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, Edward P. VanMeter, age 25, M W, clerk in dry goods store, born Virginia, is included in the household of John I. VanMeter (age 72, M W, farmer, born Virginia)[LBV note: this John I. VanMeter was Edward P. Vanmeter's great-uncle).

Obituary, The Scioto Gazette, pp. 1,2, March 22, 1933: "   In the death of Mrs. E. P. VanMeter, which occurred at her home at 238 North Mill Street at 4 o'clock this morning.  Ross County has lost not only one of her oldest citizens, but one whosae forebears belonged to a prominent pioneer family, which settled at High Bank, Ross County before Ohio entered into statehood, when all around was a wilderness.  Her great-grandfather, Edwin Harness, came from Old Field, Va., to settle in the fertile Scioto Valley, where he bought federal land, and settled with his family at what was later named High Bank.

"Ellen Harness VanMeter was born at High Bank November 12, 1850, the daughter of Charles Edwin and Mary Vause Harness.  She attended Mary Douglas School of this city, and the Femaile Academy at Hillsboro.  Upon her marriage to Edward P. VanMeter, a prominent dry goods merchant of this city, she took up her residence in this city.  Mr. VanMeter preceded her in death some years ago.

"Mrs. VanMeter united with the First Presbyterian Church, of which she continued a faithful member until her death.  Mrs. VanMeter had been in failing health for the past two years.

"Surviving her are one son, Chas. E. VanMeter, and two daughters, Miss Helen B. VanMeter of this city and Mrs. Lois Walker of Cleveland and a sister, Mrs. Lillie V. Penisten of the Foulke Block.  Three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

"Funeral services will be held from her late residence Friday morning at ten o'clock, with Dr. P. B. Ferris officiating.  Burial will follow in Grandview cemetery."
