Joel Buffington became the wealthy Buffington, building on the Savage grant land that had been obtained by William. Joel was the purchaser(disputed) of the Island of Duvol, which was renamed Buffington Island after him. This island is in the Ohio River and has been under the jurisdiction of several counties in Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio.It is presently an Ohio state park.
