According to Threlfall's GMC50 "Francis Smedley was probably born in or
near Wilne or Draycott i the parish of Sawley,Derbyshire. His wife's
name was Ellen. Since no marriage was found for themin Wilne where their
children were babtized, presumably they were married elsewhere, probably
in her home parish church. Ellen was buried in Wilne on 15April 1638.
THere is no record of the burial of Francis. Since their sons Babtist
and John emigrated to New England about this time-- they appeared in
Concord the next year-- it is quite possible that Francis went to America
with them. If so, there is no record of him, and being an old man, he
must have died within a few years."

?The ancestry of Lizzie Gee, wife of William Harrison Goodno ofMontpelier, Vermont can be traced back to Francis Smedley in England. His sons, Baptist and John Smedley, were brothers who were among thefirst settlers of Concord, Massachusetts. Their names appear in ConcordTown records as early as 1639. ?Francis Smedley was probably born inWilne or Draycott in the parish of Sawley, Derby shire, England and he isknown in the records of Sawley as "Francis of Draycott." Recordsindicate that he was married to a woman named Ellen who was buried atWilne on 15 April 1638. There is no record to indicate that Francis diedor was buried in Wilne or any other place. He may have come to Americawith his children and then died shortly thereafter. Records are in theNEHG Register for 1994. This data can also be obtained from the LatterDay Saints computerized International Genealogical Index files stored onCD ROM.
