Thomas DUDLEY, GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS

                   Governor Thomas Dudley came to America in the Arabella in 1630. Hewas
elected the second Governor of Massachusetts in 1634, 1640, 1645 and1650. He
was often Assistant or Deputy Governor 23 MAR 1629/30,
He was made Commander of the Military forces of Massachusetts in 1644.Major
General of military forces, etc. He was a short time in Ipswich andWatertown;
settled in Roxbury where he died. Also died 27 DEC 1643. Called a manof
large nobility and noble character.
The parish records of Hardington, near Northamptonshire and eightmiles from
Yardley Hastings records his marriage to Dorothy Yorke.
Records show he was well schooled in Latin in his early years. It wassaid
that he was as good a reader of Latin as the best clerk in thecounty.
Thomas studied law under his maternal relative, Judge Nicholls, ofFaxton;
managed, as Steward, the numerous posessions of his young kinsman, theEarl of
Lincoln, 1617-27. He was a Captain in the low countries.
He was one of the projectors of and later an undertaker in theMassachusetts
Bay Colony, 1629. Governor Dudley used the Dudley Coat-of-Arms, a lionrampent
vert with crescent for difference.
