Notes:
Also married 27 FEB 1870. Martha A Leonard received a good educationin the
village at Pierpont and later attended the Academy in Potsdam, NewYork where
she became better aquainted with her future husband. He was from a
neighboring farm but she hadn't known him well.
She received an excellent musical education and was known as aremarkably
good singer and a good pianist. She taught school and gave musiclessons.
She was quite popular in Pierpont, Potsdam and Canton.
She and her husband were among the pioneers of Boone, Iowa and here, though
engaged in bringing five sons to maturity, she still had time tocontinue her
music and to do her share in the community life of the town.
Her motto, Do the duty that lies nearest and all her long life shehas been
busy. Once asked what were her rules for raising her sons, she repliedthat
she had no rules because each boy was different. She did not make alarge
number of friends because she stuck very closely to her old friends. She was
so busy with her home life that she did not have much time for otherinterests.
The early-days friends, the ladies of the Monday Club, the men andwomen of
the Whist Club and all of her family were very dear to her.
As her sons brought their wives to the old home, they became herdaughters and
very dear to her. Later, their children and their children's children,
particularly in her California home, looked upon Grandma's home astheir home.
She raised one grandson, Leonard Crary, from infancy and regarded himas her
own son. Though her sons would have been glad for her to have made herhome
with them in her old age, she insisted on maintaining her own home andto
continue to look out for herself.
Martha Leonard Crary, though small of stature and quiet of manner, hasa
forceful strength that commands respect. Never obtrusive, alwaysdelighted to
have friends and family come to see her, independent, always busy andin spite
of old age, never complaining. Though hard of hearing, she did notbother
others when she could not hear. She delighted in conversation and waskeen at
repartee. She retains her love of music.
She loves life and to do her part. Her sons not only love her butrespect her
advice and counsel. The preceeding is excerpted from the LEONARDFAMILY RECORD
(JFN,1995).

Buglers Have Military Obsequies. Funeral services for the late ArthurCRARY

God is My Refuge The text for the brief sermon was chosen fromDeuteronomy
33:27, The Eternal God is Thy Refuge and Underneath are theEverlasting Arms.
After reading portions selected from the sixteenth and seventeenthPsalms, Dr.
HIGBEE said, in part, there are three admonitions of Scripturefitting three
sets of experiences which are common to men. The first admonition hasto do
with experiences in which, necessarily, a man is alone, and is Leteveryone
bear his own burden.
Help, Be Helped
The second is related to those experiences in which it is possible tohelp and
be helped, by human sympathy and support, and is Bear Ye OneAnother's
Burdens.
The third has it's meaning in those experiences in which human help isnot
sufficient and is, Cast your burden on the Lord. It is with special
reference to this third set of experiences that the text was written. The
eternal is thy refuge and underneath are the Everlasting arms.
In Jesus' Mind.
It was this also which our Savior had in mind when he said Come untome, all
ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
Dr.HIGBEE said that Mr. CRARY had obeyed each of these threeadmonitions as
these had come into his life as a soldier, a business man and aChristian
gentleman these kindred experiences.
