Nelson Orlander Joseph LAWRENCE
In the early days, was a balde shearer. Travelled to the sheds by horse with pack horse. Narramine, Condoblin, Nyngan, Dubbo and Nanora were places he worked. Could turn a hand to most things, carpentry, fencing, dam sinking, blacksmith. Later on he had a chaff cutting plant.
Could turn a hand to anything, sow beautifully, and crochet too. Greatest accomplichment was her ability to make a lovely meal from nothing. Kept a few cows, and in the slump times, kept us fed and dressed. Believed the early family born in Warmatta, until Susan who was born in Wulwala.
[php1.FTW] Son of Nelson Lawrence and Catherine Hendy, he enlisted in the 1st Australian Imperial Forc e at Melbourne Victoria on 25 September 1916. He was 21 years and 2 months old on enlistmen t (so his papers say). He embarked from Melbourne for service overseas with the 38th Battali on on the ship Medic on 16 December 1916. He served in France with the following units: 3 8th Australian Infantry, 10th Australian Infantry, 67th Australian Infantry, 39th Australia n Infantry. His decorations included the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His service No. was 2831A Private. Buried at Heilly cemetery.
