Herbert PELHAM

per Faris (1999) p. 191: [quote] ELIZABETH WEST, eldest child, was born
11 Sep. 1573. The sponsors at her baptism were Queen Elizabeth, the
Countess of Lincoln, and the Earl of Leicester, and she was doubtless
named in honour of the Queen, who was a first cousin of Elizabeth's
grandmother, Katherine Carey. Her burial inscription stated that her
youth was spent in the palace of our most serene Queen Elizabeth, her
godmother [cuj anni juveniles p'acti sunt, in aula sereniss' reginae
Elizabethae, ejus e sacro fonte susceptricis]. She was married, aged
twenty years and five months, at Wherwell, co. Hams, on 12 Feb. 1593/4 to
HERBERT PELHAM [the elder], Esq., of Fordington, co. Dorset and
Hellingly, Sussex, Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex, Burgess for Winchelsea
and Reigate, son and heir of Anthony Pelham, of Bucksteep in Warbleton,
Sussex, by his wife Margaret Hal]. He was born about 1546 (aged twenty at
his father's death in 1566), and was some thirty years her senior. His
father sent him to Cambridge where he matriculated Fellow-Commoner from
Queen's, College, Michaelmas, 1562. He had been married previously to
KATHERINE THATCHER, daughter of John Thatcher, of Priesthawes in Westham,
Sussex, by Margaret, daughter of Goddard Oxenbridge, Knt. (they had three
children, including Herbert Pelham [the younger], husband of his
Elizabeth's younger sister Penelope West [see PELHAM 2]). Herbert and
Elizabeth Pelham had four sons and six daughters. He was Sheriff of
Sussex, but in 1582 was described as neglecting his duties. On Oct. 31,
1587 he purchased the Manor of Michelham, Sussex (the site of a priory).
His later years were characterized by debt and sale of property including
Michelham. HERBERT PELHAM, Esq., died intestate on 12 Apr. 1620, and was
buried at Fordington, co. Dorset. ELIZABETH WEST resided in seclusion
with her eldest son Thomas at Compton Valence, co. Dorset, where she died
on 15 Jan. 1632/3 (M.I. in church there).
