My Great-Grandfather Oswald was born in Odessa, Russia. As was my great-grandmother Christina .
Their parents immigrated to America when great-grandmother and father were between the ages o f 3 and 8 years. Upon arriving in America, theysettled in a German Colony in South Dakota, ne ar a small town named Menno. Theywere reared on farms. Neither of them had a chance to get mu ch education. What little they got was by going to the German settlement school. In order t o go to school it meant a long walk through the snow, both morning and evening, then when the y got home, there were the chores to be done. When they were married,they lived in a small ho me where my grandmother was born. Soon afterwards, they moved to Alve, Oklahoma.
My great-grandfather owned a farm there and he raised wheat and cattle. Some years later, the y moved to Greely, Colorado, where he owned another farm, but this time he raised sugar beet s and potatoes. Because ofthe high altitude in Colorado, they moved to Big Wells, Texas, to l ive again on another farm. Here they ran into many difficulties, so they left Texas to live i n Coweta, Oklahoma. They lived there for many years and were respected citizens of the loca l community. Great-grandfather Oswald owned a grocery store and was famous for his homemade c hile and Head Cheese. He retired when he was around 65 years of age. His hobby was raising ch ickens and he always had the nicest garden in town.
