William Almus "Spud" Burks, 63, a retired farmer and lifelong resident of Sparta, died at 5:25 p.m. Sunday in his home following a lingering illness. A member of the Sparta Church of Christ, Mr. Burks is survived by his wife, Ethel; and three daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Blanchard, Crystal River, Fla.; Mrs. Maxine Strafford, Rogersville, and Mrs. Nadine Shipman, Sparta. Other survivors include four sons, Robert Glen, Union City, Calif., Jamie Harold, Indianapolis, Ind., Richard Lee, San Leandro, Calif. and Jackie Allen of the home; and three sisters, Mrs. Juanita Applegate, Fordland, Mrs. Nina Swearengin, Springfield and Mrs. Opal Daugherty, Evansville, Wyo. Also surviving are three brothers, Waldo, Ava, Lloyd, Ozark and Arthur, Jr.,, Willow Springs, and 17 grandchildren. Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sparta Church of Christ. The Rev. Dwayne Bray officiated with burial in the Sparta Cemetery under direction of Harris of Ozark.	1  _TITLE OBIT

                   Ethel Pauline (Luce) Burks
Ethel Pauline Burks, 91, Sparta, passed away October 22, 2001, in the home of her daughter. She was born August 16, 1910 near Springfield, the daughter of Royal Henry and Martha (Harris) Luce. In 1926 she and William Almus "Spud" Burks were married. He pre ceded her in death in 1967. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Burks; three brothers, Royal, Oliver, and Burt Luce; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Burks was employed by St. John's as a Nurse Assistant, and had worked at Hagale Garment Factory. She was a member of the Sparta Church of Christ. Survivors include six chil dren, Geraldine Blanchard of Melbourne, Fla., Maxine Staf ford and her husband, Bill of Rogersville, Nadine Shipman and her husband, Leonard of Sparta, Jamie Burks and his wife, Irene of Sparta, Richard Burks of Modesto, Calif. And Jackie Burks of Sparta; twenty two grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 25, 2001, i n Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Greely Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will follow in Sparta Cemetery.
