I donÕt think these are his parents. His brothers (Samuel, John & David) named their sons after each other, but none of them named them Ephraim.

Vause rhymes with cause.

Ephraim Vause, born abt 1718 married Theodocia Hulling , July 11, 1738 at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. It is supposed that Ephraims forebearers were among the German Palatines from the banks of the Rhine and the Neckar, who entered the colonies through Delaware Bay in the early 1700's. In 1746 Ephraim had patented land in Augusta County on the Virginia Frontier. His name first appears in the Augusta County Deed Books in Jan 1746 when he received a grant of 200 Acres . The site of Old Fort Vause known today in Shawsville, Montgomery County, Virginia.

There were both English Quaker Hewlings, and Swedish Hulings in s Burlington Co,NJ. Theodesia Hulings siblings went to Evesham Quaker meeting there, but Theodesia had m Ephriam Vause, and they ,and their children, moved half way down the Great Valley of Va, to the forks of the Roanoke River. Evesham Meeting had previously sent long hunting Quakers to the Va Valley, starting about 1730,in the Winchester,n Va area. Anyway, with the FRENCH and Indian War troubles, in June, 1756, Ephriam Vause's place was over-run,and the mother and 2 daughters captured. So,while her siblings are attending Quaker meetings in NJ,Theodesia and her children are captives. Not just captives, but wounded. I came into this story many years ago while researching the Polish Sodowski =Sandusky family.

The immigrant had married a Dutch gal on LONG ISLAND,and moved to NJ,and soon on to the BOONE-LINCOLN neighborhood of Amity,se BERKS CO PA,1720s. And old Antoni was an Indian trader by profession, and may have been the namesake for SANDUSKY,OHIO 1720-30 ERA. Anyway, his grandsons,JAMES and Jacob Sodowski lived on the South Branch of the Potomac, and were employees of Capt Thomas Bullitt,in the most early 1773 AND 1774 surveying parties to KY. Likely at Capt Wm Vause's place on Patterson's Creek,Jacob Sodowki met and married Jemina Vause,of Theodesia.

And the SANDUSKY genealogy gave a description of her. She had been scalpted in that 1756 capture, and she also had an open wound into a sinus. She kept the wound stuffed with cotton, which moved with every breathe. She had a sister who m Abraham Inskeep, whose roots wee in the HADDONFIELD Quaker meeting ,NJ,just south of the Evesham Meeting. And her brother,Capt Wm Vause married a Hedges gal on Patterson's Creek,WV,and their dau m Wm,of Gabrial FOX. Capt Wm Vause recieved a military land bounty in mid Brown Co,Oh for his REV WAR services in the VA LINE. That's my outline of the capture of Ephriam Vause's females,of QUAKER birth. Who can add more? NOT a descendant, though Gabrial Fox was a many great uncle. And the SWEDISH Hulings of s Burlington Co,NJ were raised by their uncle,my anscestor CASPER FISH.

Abner Vance migrated into the southwestern part of Virginia (Clinch River Valley, Russell Co) sometime arount 1790. He was of the Baptist faith and spent much of his time preaching. One of Abner's daughters (and it is thought to have been Elizabeth) ran off with Lewis Horton. After several months Lewis Horton returned with the girl and dropped her off at her parent's home. It is said that Abner and Susannah pleaded with Lewis to marry the girl. He refused and turned to ride away. Abner went into the house and returmed with his gun ans shot Horton as he was riding away. Horton died a few hours later. Abner became a fugitive. He left Russell County that night, Sept. 17, 1817, and traveled along the Tug and Guyandotte Rivers where he spent the next two years. Abner returned to Russell County at the urging of his family to stand trial. Public opinion was that Abner would be "freed" due to his "reputation as a preacher". On his arrival he was locked in jail and held without bail. The trial ended in a hung jury. A second trial was held in Washington County, VA. There Abner was found guilty and sentenced to hang. The case was taken to the court of appeals but the lower courts decision was upheld. Petitions for the release of Abner Vance were circulated but to no avail. Abner was hanged on July 16, 1819 in Abington, VA. A short time afterwards a courier arrived with a pardon from the Governor. Susannah left and migrated into the Tug, Big Sandy and Guyandotte River Valley.
