John CHENOWETH
The Chenoweths of John and Mary are a Colonial Family that started in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area about 1703 and moved to Baltimore Co., MD in the 1730s. In the 1740s the father and 3 of the sons moved to Frederick Co., VA. Two of the sons stayed in Baltimore Co. Virginia became a springboard for the westward movement and the Chenoweths a family of pioneer-settlers. The next immigration of anyone with the Chenoweth name did not come until 1820. Today 9 of 10 Chenoweths [by various spellings] are descended from this one Colonial Family.
Arthur was the third son and fifth child, born about 1716, probably in Pennsylvania or New Jersey before the family came to Maryland. He would outlive all his siblings, dying in Baltimore County at the age of 86, having lived there all his life. At about 22 years of age he married there, Saphira Hooker, the daughter of Samuel Hooker. Saphira and Arthur would have 8 known children, six sons and two daughters, six of whom were mentioned in his will. Arthur was a vestryman at St. Thomas Parish in Baltimore. Here he recorded the births of his children. It is thought that, at the age of 42, after all his children were born, he fought at Fort Duquesne, in a successful attack against the French during the French and Indian War. This site later became Fort Pitt and developed into present day Pittsburgh. Arthur Chenoweth is the first Chenoweth to have purchased land in Baltimore Co. In his lifetime he would add to his holdings and build a mill on a 'run' through his property, which he successfully operated. Arthur's land holding are described by Elmer Haile, Jr. as follows: On September 1, 1740 a survey was made for Arthur Chenoweth for 43 acres about a mile northwest of present-day Reisterstown, named "Arthur's Lott." A patent was issued the following year by the proprietor's land office. This was followed by a 100-acre grant adjoining Arthur's Lott which Arthur called "Arthur's Addition," surveyed July 20, 1747. Other acquisitions followed as noted by Mrs. Hiatt on page 83. Later, Arthur bought more land adjoining his first farm and his son bought part of White Oak Bottom. In a 1763 deed, Arthur's occupation was blacksmith. These properties were located in the Soldiers Delight Hundred. Arthur died in Baltimore County on March 14, 1802. Saphira, though her age is unknown, died there about two years before Arthur. Arthur's lines are presently the smallest of the 5 sons of John and Mary, a distinction that formerly belonged to his brother, William.
