The 7th Earl played an important part in the early stages of theHundred Years War, being a joint commander of the 1st divisionat both Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356). At the latter it washis adroit management of the archers that helped secure victory.[Burke's Peerage, Earldom of Oxford, p. 2178]
