Stephen BEDFORD
Stephen Bedford will - Cumberland, Parrish of Southam - Mentioned: wife Elisabeth, daughters Sarah and Maudlin Mosby - sons Benjamin, Thomas and Stephen Bedford - 27 March 1758 - proven 28 August 1758 - W.B. 1 Pg. 156 Stephen was Captain of the Militia in the Colonial Wars of VA for Coochland Co, May 1740; Just of Goochland Co., VA 1741; Goodchland Co, VA in 1745. he became the first sheriff of cumberland County at its organization 0n 22 May 1749. He received a land grant of 329 acres on the upper side of Twitty's Creek (in today's Charlotte Co) on 15 Mar 1744 and 1688 acres on both sides of Twitty's Creek beginning at the Rees Branch on 5 July 1751. The 1688 acres were a grant from King George II of England according to a patent record in the Land Office in Richmond VA. A deed in Powhatan County (Vol. 19 Pg. 313 ) indicates a cemetery was reserved ont he land in that county which was probably the Bedford burying ground where Stephen and others of the family that died in Powhatan County were buried. Ruins of a house were reported at one time near this site which was probably the Stephen Bedford home.

Birth (2): 1730? in Cumberland Co., VA - will: 31 May 1772. Prob of Est. 24 Augus 1772 in cumberland Co., Va. The 3rd date of birth for Benjamin is 1740 Cumberland Co, VA. Benjamin was over 14 in 1758, but under 21 years of age. Jacob Mosby became his guardian in August of 1859 and Littyleberry Mosby, Gent. was the security after the death of his father. He was appointed survey on 23 May 1761 of "the roaqd whereof Joseph Epperson was late surveyor with the uinual gang." Benjamin inherited the homeplace from his father and died there in the old Bedford home in Cumberland County (now Powhatan) on Deep Creek.
