The Nephi Record Friday 21 December 1906 Vol. 19 No. 51
Young Man Suicides
Walter Blacket, in a fit of despondency, drinks half an ounce of Carbolic.
Tuesday evening Walter Blackett committed suicide at the Duncan House by drinking a half ounce of carbolic acid. Although everything possible was done for the sufferer he died in less than half hour after taking the fatal dose. His relatives in Nephi were notified and arrived the next morning to take charge of the body and take it home for burial. Edward Averett was with the young man at the time he committed the rash act. They were in the room of Mr. Blackett and had been talking for some time. Finally he gave Mr. Averett a letter addressed to Miss Lizzie Clyed with instructions to give it to her personally, but told him to read it, to which the young man demurred. Mr. Blackett insisted and he opened the letter and began to read it when he heard the unfortunate young man say, "Goodbhe Jockey". He turned and saw his companion with the bottole of poison to his mouth drinking its contents. Quick as possible he knocked the bottle out of his hand and run down the stairs to give the alarm. This was at 7:30. Proprietor Rhead telephoned at once to the doctors who arrived at 7:40 but the deadly poison had done its work and the victime was pronounced deat at 7:55. Justice Clegg was at once called and decided that an inquest was unnecessary. The body was then turned over to the Undertaker Bond to await the orders of his folk.

Besides the letter referred to above, he left one to the public which reads as follows: Heber, City Utah Dec. 10, 1906 - This is a notice to the public I do what is done with my own hand so no inquest needs to be held on this account for I have lived on this earth for twenty one years and all ways tried to be honest up to now and when a young man lets some habig get the controle of him he is better dead' not that anything like that has happened with me but I have been drunk for the last week and I think I will put an end to this. All I ask is to notify Mrs. W.H. Sperry of my death at Nephi City, Utah.

All I ask is to burry me the way I am and not touch anything that belongs to me until you have some of my folks hear. Notify Lawrence Blackett of this the same time as you do Mrs. W.H. Sperry. If he isn't in Nephi, you will find him at Eureka, the Beck store. So farewell to all my friends in Heber, for there is sure some fine people here and there is one (thing) beware of. If I was alive I would not be afraid to face anything I say and I have the nerve to do anything; but then warn the boys against drinking whisky, that is the worst thing that a young man can do. So I state these few lines with an open heart and bid everyone a farewell so good bye." Yours respect - Walt Blackett

His family was notified at once by telephoning and the next morning his mother, Mrs. Blackett, his sister Mrs Sperry, accompanied by her husband's brother and Leonard Blackett a brother of deceased, arrived from Nephi, the family home. They returned yesterday with the remains. Mr. Blackett was but twenty one years old and had been engaged for some time by a local sheep man. For the past year he has made the Duncan House his home when in Heeber and the host and hostess both speak of him in the highest terms saying that his conduct about the house was always that of a gentle man and very popular among the young people of the City, among whom he had a host of friends who deeply regret his early and untimely death. The primary cause of his rash act was undoubtedly whisky - remorse and despondence caused by a week of "having a good time with the boys: and the fact that he had recently had a falling out with his girl must have robbed him of his sober senses and benumbed his better judgement causing him to commit the insane act. - Wasatch Wave.
