Sept. 21, 1923 ~ July 30, 2013
Our beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on July 30, 2013 due to natural causes related to age. He departed peacefully and happily early Tuesday morning to be reunited with the love of his life, Margean, who has been deceased for over ten years. He set a wonderful example of hard work, integrity and devotion to his family and will be missed deeply by all.
Born September 21, 1923 to George H. Ostler and Luella Blackett in Nephi, Utah. He married Zella Margean Cooper on January 7, 1948 in the Manti Utah temple. Into this family came four wonderful children, two daughters and two sons and 22 grandchildren. Great grandchildren number 38 and are still accumulating.
Alan's early life was filled with daily labor on the family farm where he learned to milk cows, herd sheep, raise cattle and horses, care for turkeys and chickens and raise a variety of crops. His life was simple and devoted to making the most of best efforts and being comfortable with what he had. He served in the US Navy during World War II where he eventually was assigned to the island of Guam. He returned home, met his future wife and began their journey together.
Their first 24 years as a family were in Nephi where he worked and operated the Ostler farm. He was also the local distributor for Meadow Gold milk and Famlee Bread. Many long days saw him in stores and restaurants in Nephi and all of Sanpete County. He taught his sons and daughters the value of a hard days work. In 1972 the family moved to Bountiful, Utah and Alan became a real estate appraiser for the State of Utah where he worked until retirement in 1988. He continued with his own private appraisal business until he was 72 years old.
He loved all sports especially golf, bowling, and baseball, the San Francisco Giants and BYU Cougars were his favorite to watch on TV or in person. He joined the exclusive 300 club with a perfect game of bowling in a league in Nephi in the 1960's. As a golfer he enjoyed the companionship of friends and helped to acquire the land and design the golf course in Nephi. He loved creating stained glass pieces and refinishing furniture.
Moving to Bountiful was a major change, however it turned out to be a major blessing as new deep friendships were formed and lasting experiences gained. The Val Verda neighbors were cherished and eternal bonds created. Alan was a lifelong member of the LDS church. He loved learning and serving. He was a high priest.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, beautiful wife Margean, and cherished grandson Aaron, He is survived by his four children and spouses - Steven (Deborah), Jeffrey (Jan), Geri (Lou) Christensen and Regan (Andy) Sutalo as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 2 at the Val Verda Stake Center on 2651 South 500 West, Bountiful at 11:30 a.m. A viewing will be held just prior to the funeral services at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will be in the Nephi City Cemetery. Services provided by Anderson Funeral Home, Nephi, UT 801-580-3366.
