Hugh GUNNISON

                   Genealogy of the Ingersoll Family - Pg. 6 #9 John Ingersoll born at Salem in 1645; died in Kittery, 1716.  In his will of 27 September 1714, proved 4 April 1716, he names his wife and all his children except a daughter, deceased, who had married a Brown.  He b\\prospered at Falmouth, Maine, where he bought 1 May 1675, from George Munjoy a large tract of land.  Driven from Falmouth by Indians in 1675, he sought refuge, with his father and brother, in Salem, where 11 November 1675, the town "admitted (them) as inhabitants during the time of the Indian wards being driven from their habitations."  He moved to Kittery in 1676, where his wife lived, but in 1680 was again in Falmouth, where he received a house-lot and 60 acres of land at Ft. Loyal on 23 September 1676.  The Massachusetts grant of land and mill privileges, confirmed 13 Oct 1680, was perfected in 1682, and from 1684 was worked by a company.  John's occupancy of hs farm at the Stroudwater (now Westbrook) was interrupted by the second Indian War, when he sought refuge at Kittery, where he was a carpenter.  He also owned land in Kittery, Berwick and Scarboro.

He married Deborah Gunnison, daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth Gunnison, of Boston, 1634, and Kittery, 1651,from which latter town Hugh was chosen Deputy of the General Court in 1653, 1654, and 1657.  Deborah was baptized at Boston "about 7 days old," 25 July 1642; she died after 8 July 1728.  8 July 1726, aged 83, she deposed that she lived at Falmouth fifty years since, on a farm lyin up old Casco River.
