Find a Grave - John Jackson - born 6 June 1602 in England - died 30 Jan 1675 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts WIFE: Margaret Taft CHILDREN: Margaret Jackson Mary Jackson Edward Jackson Abraham Jackson History of Newton Page 86 John Jackson was baptized in the parish of Stephney, London, June 6, 1602. He was the first settler of Cambridge Village who removed thither and died in the place. He brought a good estate with him from England. He took the freeman oath in 1641. He was one of the first deacons of the church, and gave an acre of land for the church and cemetery, in the centre of which the first meeting-house was erected in 1660. This acre constitutes the oldes part of the old cemetery on Centre Street. He labored long and earnestly, by petitioning the General Court and otherwise, to have Cambridge Village erected into an independent town; but he did not live to see the object accomplished. He died January 30, 1674-5, aged about 73 years. His widow, Margaret, died August 28, 1684, aged 60. His son, Edward, was slain by the Indians at Medfield,, in their attack upon and burning of that town, Feb. 21, 1676. His house was near the place where Mr. Smallwood's shop afterwards stood. The cellar yet remains, and the pear trees now standing there, ar supposed to have been planted by him. Abraham was the only one among his sons who reared a family. From the History of Newton, Page 142 Jackson, Deacon John (d. 1675), the first settler of Cambriddge Village, who remained and died in it. In 1639, he bought of Miles Ives, of Watertown, a dwelling-house and eighteen acres of land, situated on the Roxbury road, very near the line which now divides Newton from Brighton. It was he who gave an acre of land for the first meeting-house and burial place, now the oldest part of the old cemetery on Centre Street. His old mansion house, which was pulled down about 1800, stood on the spot afterwards occupied by the dwelling-house of Edwin Smallwood. The old pear trees on the estate are supposed to have been planted by his son Abraham, who added an acre to the acre given by his father for the meeting-house and burial place. He left eight hundred and sixty-three acres of land. Deacon Jackson's Headstone no longer exists at the burying ground. THIS IS THE MONUMENT TO THE FIRST SETTLERS OF CAMBRIDGE VILLAGE, NOW KNOWN AT NEWTON, MA. Plot 263 Find a Grave - Margaret Taft Jackson - born 1624 - died 25 August 1684 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts Hello, A findagrave member, Tom Boyd, checked to see if Margaret Jackson's headstone is still there. Margaret was an ancestor of mine. Tom learned that her stone was damaged and buried for safe keeping in 1981. This is according to the book, "Where Newton Began, A Guide to the East Parish Burying Ground" by Thelma Fleishman, Newton Historical Society [page 23]. Would you mind adding that the stone was buried for safe keeping? Thanks, Richard M. Trowbridge Family Pg. 215-216 - #4 - Deacon James Trowbridge, third and youngest son of Thomas Trowbridge, the settle, from Taunton, England was born at Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1636, and baptized in 138. In 1641 his father moved, with his family to New Haven,Connecticut. James, however, when near his majority, returned to Dorchester and occupied lands owned by his father prior to his removal. He was twice married - 1st to Margaret Atherton, daughter of Major-General Humphrey Atherton, 30 December 1659, being about 23 yrs of age, by whom he had seven children. She died 17 August 1672. 2nd He married Margaret Jackson, daughter of Deacon John Jackson 30 January 1674 by whom he had seven children. In 1664 he moved from Dorchester to Cambridge Village, (now Newton). The Dorchester Church Records state that the wife of Thomas Wiswall, the wife of Goodman Kinwright, and Margaret, the wife of James Trowbridge, were dismissed to the church, gathered at Cambridge Village, 11th of July 1664. After the death of his father-in-law, Deacon John Jackson, he was elected to succeed him in office, in 1675, the duties of which he discharged until his death, a period of 42 years. In 1675 he purchased of Deputy Governor Danforth 85 acres of land, with a dwelling-house and out-buildings thereon which the Governor had occupied for some years, bounded with the highways west and south, the narrow lane north, his own land east, "the dividing line being straight through the swamp." This estate has always been occupied by his descendants, and is the property, at present (1869) of Mr. Nathan Trowbridge of the seventh generation from the first settler. He was chosen one of the first board of selectmen, at the organization of the town 27 August 1679, and continued in that office nine years. He was clerk of the Writs in 1692 and 1693; Lieutenant and Representative to the General Court in 1700 and 1703. He left a will dated 1709, and a codicil dated 1715, proved June 1717. The inventory of his personal estate was £240 Os. 7d. By said will he bequeathed what right of lands he had in Dorchester which came by his own father, Thomas, to all his children equally; and all the right to lands that came by his father-in-law, Atherton, to the children of his first wife equally. He died 22 May 1717, aged 81. Mrs. Margaret Trowbridge died 16 September 1727, aged 78.
