George Young SMITH

Historical Notes:
         After they joined the LDS Church, they were anxious to emigrate to Utah and live among the Saints.  So in the sping of 1862 they sold their home and saidgoodbye to their relatives and friends aand set sail on the vessel "William Tapscot" on the May 3, 1862, leaving their loved ones and a little grave behind.  It took six weeks to cross the ocean in a sailing vessel.  They traveled by trainfrom New York to Florence, Nebraska and walked from there to Utah, where they arrived in October.  The oldest little girl, Sarah, seven years old had to walk,Annie, three years old was carried by her father.  Margaret, the baby nine months was carried by the mother.  They visited in Salt Lake City with friends for afew weeks, until Robert A. Bain came and took them to Smithfield.  They arrivedin November.
       The people were living in the Fort, it was located along each side of Summit Creek.  The Smith family lived in a one room house with a dirt roof.  The living conditions were rather uninviting to the "new comers," after leaving their comfortable home in Dundee, but they were happy to find ahelter inmost any place.
       The people were living in the fort for protection from the Indians.
       In time they owned a two room adoby home on west 1st south, Smithfield, Utah.  Here seven more children were born, two died in infancy and two while very young.  In 1879 they added more room to their home.  During the fall of 1879 thefamily was stricken with tyfoid fever.  The mother, two little ones and two grown daughters died, leaving two others seriously ill; however, these two recoveredand they with their father were left in the home alone.  The two older daughters, Sarah and Annie were married.
       Some time later the father married and brought his wife home. She was a widow (Mrs. Elizabeth Reed) with two children.  The children remained with their grandmother.  There were three children born to this union, two boys and one girl.Jane soon married and left home and George went to live on a farm and earned his own way from then on.
