John GATCHELL

Note: BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Gatchell, the father of John and Samuel Getchell, in all probability, was English. There are indications documented in the "Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English emigrants to New England, 1620 - 1650" by Charles Edward Banks (1967) that the Getchell brothers, John and Samuel came from West Monkton, Somersetshire, England. The Mary & John Clearing House, Vol. 19, part three, suggest the possibility that they came to America on the ship "Hopewell" which sailed from Weymouth, England, in 1635. Also from the same source: from the 1909 "Family of Samuel Getchell" by Everett Lamont Getchell: Samuel Getchell, with his brother John, came to America and settled first in Salem, Mass., in 1636. Samuel then settled in Hampton, New Hampshire, and last he moved his family to Salisbury, Mass. Regarding his life, "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire, 1623 to 1660" by Charles Henry Pope, page 77, says than Samuel was a planter in Salem in 1637, that he moved to Hampton, where he was a proprietor in 1645. He sold a house and land there in 1648. He moved to Salisbury, where he was listed as a proprietor and commoner in 1650. Regarding his death, "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire, 1623 to 1660" by Charles Henry Pope, says he died about 1694. His will was dated April 2, 1684 and probated on Oct. 6, 1697.
