Kinne aka Kenninge, Keny, Kenney, Keine
RESEARCH NOTE:
      Historical detail in NOTES

Henry (Kinney) Kenney was born on 8 Jul 1623 in Kings Lynne, Norfolk, England. He died on 19 Jun 1696 in Newbury, Massachusetts (Essex). According to Pope's Pioneers of Massachusetts, his name first appears in Roxbury, 21 June 1639, when as Henry Kenninge he was apprenticed to Wm. Park by Vincent Potter, who was presumably a relative and who brought him from Holland in May 1635 by way of London on the ship "Elizabeth & Ann" which sailed for the New World April 29th of that year. As Henry Keny he appears in Ipswich, MA records in 1648. In Salem vital records, his name appears twice as Kenney and as Keine. He was a planter in Salem, now Danvers, Essex Co., MA as early as 1648. The site of his house is within the location of Boston and Newburyport turnpike, about midway between Preston and Nichols Streets. It was known as "The Henry Kinne House." About sixty acres of surrounding land was conveyed to him 26 Feb. 1661. This house was destroyed by fire in the summer of 1696. He was taxed in 1682 and a constable in 1686. He was a very religious man and officiated at church services. He was a soldier under Major Sedgwich about 1654 at the taking of St. John from the French. He was at the capture of Fort Narragansett with Capt. George Curwin's Co., 3 Dec 1673 and drew pay 24 Jan. 1676 for military service. He is probably the same Henry Kinne who died 19 June 1696 in Newbury, MA (vital records). A quit-claim deed from his youngest son, Henry to his oldest son, John, dated 6 June 1712, refers to him as deceased, hence some records give 1712 as th possible year of his death. Doubtless he was buried in the old cemetery in Danvers on land once owned by him and not far from the house where Gen. Israel Putnam was born in 1716.Several published biographies state his wife was Ann Howard, born 1632, daughter of Thomas Howard of Aylesford, Co. Kent, England who came with his wife Susannah and five children to Ipswich, MA 17 March 1634. But other records say Ann Howard died unmarried and that Henry Kinne married 12th day 10th month 1649 Ann Putname. She is presumed to be the same Anne Putnam who was baptized 4 Feb. 1629-30 Greenwich, Kent, England daughter of Edmund (Edward) Putnam of Greenwich and his wife Anne Compton, who were married 10 Feb 1623-4 at Greenwich, England. As the Kinne and various Putnam families were close neighbors in Salem, this latter supposition seems logical and is presumably correct.(Source: THE GENEALOGY OF HENRY AND ANN KINNE PIONEERS OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS, by Florance Keeney Robertson, M.A. Wetzel Publishing Co. Inc., Los Angeles, CA.)Henry, a son of John, has been erroneously called a son of Sir Thomas. According to the old records he was born in 1623, so couldn't have been a son of Sir Thomas. As evidenced by existing records, he was grandson of Sir Thomas. He came as a passenger on the ship "Elizabeth & Ann" out of London, 1635. He was of Salem 1648 and died at Salem in 1712. Another record gave his death as 1696, but Ms. Hinckley says "I believe the former to be correct from my research."Henry served in King Philip's War under Major Sedgwick and was at St. John in 1654.Ms. Hinckley includes a copy of a letter written 13 December 1935 by W. Franklin Kinney to Mrs. M. E. Armstrong of Los Angeles, CA. I have only quoted portions of the letter:"Henry was a passenger on the ship "Elzabeth & Ann" out of London May 1635 with three other apprentices in care of Vincent Potter, Gent. His name on the list is given Kenninge which seems to have been the use then for Ann Kenninge is so listed as member of church, Salem. The English spelling for several hundred years previous is simply Kene and the Milesian spelling Cineadh, d is silent; for instance Cel Cineadh Kilkenny. Cel-Hall or home of Cineadh-Kinnee. This Cineadh was first mentioned family name as yet found 25 generations prior to Henry the immigrant or 103rd on my chart. He was son of Dunock,
