This Henry was the step-son and later son-in-law of William Pynchon who settled Springfield, MA and later returned to England due to intense controversy and persecution due to a religious pamphlet he wrote. Henry returned to England with his father/father-in-l;aw in 1652.Since I can't identify with any degree of proof those children found on the Ancestral File and not mentioned in the will, they are omitted from this record unless they died prior to William Pynchon.SPRINGFIELD, MA:In the first election of selectman (administrative board in towns of New England) to be held on 26 Sep 1644, those chosen were Henry Smith, Thomas Cooper, Samuel Chapin, Richard Sikes, and Henry Burt.In 1650, Hugh Dudley of Barnett was indentured by William Pynchon to Henry Smith of Springfield for the term of 5 years. Termination of his indenture did not end his dependence on the Pynchons who tried to help him establish himself.Henry Smith: Son of Francis Sanford Smith who married 2nd William Pynchon. Henry married Ann Pynchon, daughter of his step-father, William. Sometime after her father's banishment from New England, it is stated that his daughter, Ann, wife of Henry Smith, "went crazy." Brother-in-law to John Pynchon and Elizur Holyoke. Smith served as a deputy one term; selectman 7 terms; General Court appointed Smith the magistrate for Springfield as the successor to William Pynchon, however, Henry soon followed William to England. He died in England in 1681/2.
