Nathaniel HAMMOND, III

                   FAMILY: I created this family group sheet while trying to solve a problem with the wife of son, Philip.  The Vital Records of Rochester show that there are (Hammond) children born to two different Nathaniels- Nathaniel 3rd and Nathaniel 3rd, Esq.  Taking out the children of Nathaniel 3rd, Esq (Enoch, Priscilla, Rufus, Nathanil b. 1710 and Benjamin) clears up the problems dealing with children being born too close together.  However, in none of the recorded births is the name of the wife given, which is common in this reference.  I see no further work being done on this draft FGS at the present time................Bla 02/02/02

Later Information:- The death of Enoch on 9 Mar 1793 (at 25 days) establishes that the name of Nathaniel Esq's wife is Lucy.  (Also Lucy's death as the wife of Nathaniel Esq. is recorded on pg. 387.)  The death of Caleb on 1 Sept 1819 gives some clues that the wife of Nathaniel 3rd might be Sylvia. (LTR 689, ordinance work for Philip (F) Hammond shows Sylvia Blankinship as his mother.)   On Pg 388 of the VR of Rochester, a Philip T dies who is the son of Sylvia, widow, throwing more light on the question.   Then on Pg. 389 we have the death of Sylvia, widow of Nathaniel's, on 5 Sep 1840 in 66th year. Nathaniel, husband of Sylvia, is shown on pg. 388 at being lost at sea in 1812, age. 43, this would make him born in 1768/9, the right age to be the father of the children in this family group.  On the same page, Nathaniel 2nd, Esq., dies 12 Oct 1838, at age 70, making him born in 1768, again the right age (he may have been 3rd, but now 2nd as his father or grandfather would have died.) As there is only one Nathaniel Hammond recorded as being born in 1768 (Pg. 152, son of Edward and Mary) it is probably certain that this is Nathaniel Esq. as the father's name is Edward, not Nathaniel. Further, Lucy, the wife of Nathaniel Esq. died on 28 Oct, 1802 in her 31st year, per Pg. 387 of Vol 2 of VR-Rochester.

Lastly, perhaps, pg. 26 of Vol 2 shows that Nathanial Jr married Lucy Barstow Oct 1791 and Sylvia Blankinship on 9 Mar 1793 (Pg. 43).  Nathaniel (int. Esq) married Priscilla Hammond 30 Oct 1803.  As of this date, I believe I have this family sorted out.  But It is stil unclear as to the birth date and parentage of the father, Nathaniel Hammond 3rd.........Bla 08/24/02
