Mary Sherwood (granddaughter of Edward's brother, William) wrote:
"Edward Rice Sr., Grandfather's brother had a ship and he brought things from the West Indies to New York City for merchants my Father said.
Also Father said he had one dollar pieces of money laid in his hearth instead of brick in his fire place, and he said he was a wealthy batchelor. . . (Note: He married late.)
Father told when he was a young boy his uncle Edward layed a 25 cent piece of silver money on a chair and a big old penny and told him he could have his choice. Father chose the silver piece, although it was no larger , and then his Uncle laughed saying the boy was going to like money."
