Notes:
Philippa was the widow of John Dormer of Buckinghamshire. She renounced administration of her husband's estate in favor of the eldest son, George Cotton. A letter from Mrs. Philippa Cotton, dated from Stoke, 1 Nov 1601, addressed to Sir Robert Cecil, later Earl of Shrewsbury, is extant; it asked for help for "me and my children" as his "poor, yet very near kinswoman." She also identified herself as "her majesty's sworn servant these 20 years." A letter signed "Philippa cotton" and dated 23 Nov 1609 thanked the Earl for a gift of 150 lbs. Her will, dated 30 May 1625 and proved in the Cinsistory Court of Lichfield 18 Aug 1631, mentions sons Sir Thomas Monteith, Kt., John Dormer and Philip Cotton, and daughters Elizabeth Dormer (deceased) and Bridgett Cotton, who served as executrix. Administration of the Goods of Richard Cotton Esquire, Foresuch as Richard Cotton Esquire late of Stoke being within the county of the city of Coventry late husband unto me Philippa Cotton now Widow did upon the 14th of this present month of June depart this mortal life and having goods as well within the county of Chester as herein this his late dwelling place, and hath not by any will or testament disposed the same but they are to be by somebody to be administered, know ye that I the said Philippa cotton his late wife being unfit to undertake such charge upon me to administer do refer the same to Mr. George Cotton being the eldest son of my late husband or to whom else shall be thought fit in your descretion. /s/ Philippa Cotton Witnessed by Richard Wallins, Andrew Cotton
