Mr. & Mrs. Merrick Woodard and family left Hadley, New York, and came west to Nebraska in 1883. Gordon Pearl CRANNELL (1919- ) on 29 May 1997 commented to Kenneth M. REIM (1926- ) about his Grandfather, Merrick Bennett WOODARD (1851-1934) as follows: While living in Hadley, New York, he broke oxen, hauled freight, and mentioned you had to know how to lift an 800 pound barrel of salt. Why did they move to Nebraska - Gordon didn't know, but thought land in Nebraska was opening up, and many were moving west. In Tekamah, Merrick did carpenter an cabient work, worked in a lumber yard, and did some bookeeping. Built a number of buildings around Tekamah; wrote his name some place on the buiding he built. Merrick and Anna WOODARD very active/prominent in the Tekamah Methodist Church. Merrick once shaved off his beard, and his wife Anna, said she wanted his beard back.

She came with her parents to Nebraska in 1883 and lived in Burt County, Nebraska the rest of her life. Her education was recieved in Tekamah. She passed her teacher's examination and taught in the Pleasant Home District and Golden Springs District. She served as organist in the Luthern Church for several years befor her marriage. She was active in the Riverside Church Mission Circle and served as treasurer of the organization for many years. She joined the First Baptist Church in Tekamah March 5, 1944, and was a faithful worker until her health failed. See the notes for her husband, Oscar MorrisHENNIG, for further information.

Ella (WOODARD) WOODYARD and first husband Floyd WOODYARD reportedly did not live in the Tekamah, Nebraska area (by Gordon WOODARD, 3 May 2000). Ella had no children by any of her three marriages; likely died and was buried in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado.
